In a significant development for aspiring postgraduate medical students across India, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET PG) 2025 is now confirmed to be held on August 3, 2025. This decision comes after the Supreme Court on Friday, June 6, 2025, granted approval to the National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) for an extension of the exam date.
The examination, which was initially scheduled for June 15, 2025, faced an unexpected postponement following a directive from the Supreme Court on May 30, 2025. The apex court had mandated that NEET PG be conducted in a single shift to ensure fairness and uniformity in the examination process, rejecting NBEMS’s initial plan for a two-shift format.
The shift from a two-shift to a single-shift examination presented considerable logistical challenges for the NBEMS. The Board subsequently filed an application with the Supreme Court, seeking an extension of time to make the necessary arrangements. Citing the need to significantly increase the number of examination centers and implement robust security measures to accommodate all candidates in one sitting, NBEMS, through its technical partner Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), identified August 3 as the earliest feasible date.
While initially expressing concerns about the two-month delay, a bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Augustine George Masih ultimately deemed the reasons cited by NBEMS as “bona fide” and allowed the application. However, the court made it unequivocally clear that no further extensions would be granted for the conduct of NEET PG 2025.
This ruling brings a degree of clarity for the lakhs of medical graduates who have been diligently preparing for this crucial entrance examination. The NEET PG is the gateway to admission into Doctor of Medicine (MD), Master of Surgery (MS), and PG Diploma programs across various medical colleges in India.
