New Delhi, September 18, 2025: Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement” has been formally signed between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, marking a new chapter in their long-standing security relationship. The pact, which was finalized during a state visit by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, establishes a crucial clause that states, “any aggression against either country shall be considered an act of aggression against both.” This agreement is being viewed as a significant step toward formalizing the security cooperation that has existed for decades between the two nations.

The accord was signed by Prime Minister Sharif and Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh. According to a joint statement released by both nations, the agreement is grounded in their shared strategic interests, Islamic solidarity, and a partnership that has extended for nearly eight decades. It is expected to enhance bilateral security ties and strengthen joint deterrence against any aggression in the region.

The signing of the agreement has been described as a culmination of years of discussions. A senior Saudi official, who spoke to reporters on the condition of anonymity, stated that the pact is a comprehensive defensive agreement and not a response to any specific recent events. When asked about the potential inclusion of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons in the pact, the official did not specify, but stated that the agreement “encompasses all military means.”

The timing of the pact has been noted by observers, as it comes just days after an extraordinary joint session of the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was convened following an Israeli strike on the Qatari capital, Doha. While the pact has been described as an institutionalization of long-standing cooperation, its announcement has been seen by some as a move to broaden Saudi Arabia’s security partnerships beyond its traditional alliances.

The agreement is anticipated to have significant implications for regional security. By pledging to act jointly in the face of aggression, a clear deterrent message is being sent to potential adversaries. It is believed that this commitment may influence the strategic calculus of various regional players and could also affect broader alliances.

The pact is being closely monitored by other nations, including India. The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi has stated that the government was aware that such a development was under consideration and that its strategic and security implications would be studied carefully. The statement reaffirmed India’s commitment to protecting its national interests and ensuring comprehensive national security in all domains.
