New Delhi, November 10, 2025: Swift and decisive action has been taken by the Indian Railways following the viral circulation of a video showing a contractual coach attendant throwing a bag of garbage from a moving train. The footage, which sparked widespread public outrage over waste disposal practices, led to the immediate removal of the employee and the imposition of a penalty on the hiring contractor.

The Details of the Incident and Employee’s Retort

The video was captured by a passenger, Abhishek Singh, on November 4, 2025, aboard the Sealdah-Ajmer Express (12987). The footage showed a contractual staff member, later identified as Sanjay Singh, tossing a bag of collected garbage from an open doorway onto the railway tracks as the train was in motion.

When the staffer was confronted by the passenger, his dismissive retort—”Should I take it home?”—was also captured and was widely condemned online. The passenger’s efforts to explain the environmental and civic wrong of the act were ultimately refused by the attendant, who was seen repeating the action shortly afterward. The clip quickly gained attention, fueling criticism of the standards of On-Board Housekeeping Services (OBHS).

Swift Disciplinary Measures Were Imposed

The Railways, specifically the North Western Railway, addressed the issue publicly after the video became a major talking point. An official response was issued, confirming that the complaint had been viewed “seriously.”

The following disciplinary actions were announced and immediately implemented:

  • The contractual staff member, Sanjay Singh, was removed from service with immediate effect.
  • A strict penalty was imposed on the contractual firm responsible for hiring the OBHS staff.
  • A comprehensive counseling drive was started immediately to educate all OBHS staff on proper waste disposal protocols, ensuring that garbage is only disposed of at nominated stations to prevent future recurrence of such environmental lapses.

The swiftness of the response was acknowledged by commentators, with the action being seen as a reflection of the Railways’ commitment to its “Swachh Rail, Swachh Bharat” mission.

Commitment to Cleanliness Is Reaffirmed

The incident has served as a stark reminder of the challenges faced in maintaining environmental standards across the vast railway network. The firm and immediate action taken by the authorities is intended to send a clear message that such breaches of protocol will not be tolerated. The public’s role in reporting such instances was also acknowledged and appreciated by the railway officials.
