New Delhi, November 28, 2025: Nearly a decade after the tragic death of popular television actress Pratyusha Banerjee, her former boyfriend, actor-producer Rahul Raj Singh, has once again brought the case back into the spotlight with an emotional and detailed account of the day she passed away. Pratyusha, best known for her role in Balika Vadhu, was found dead by hanging in her Mumbai apartment on April 1, 2016, at the age of 24.
In a recent, exclusive conversation, Singh strongly refuted the allegations of murder and abetment of suicide that have shadowed him for years. He recounted the harrowing moment he discovered Pratyusha.
Singh claims that when he finally managed to break into their locked apartment with the help of a locksmith, Pratyusha was hanging but still “alive.” He described the terrifying minutes that followed, stating he quickly took her down, gathered her, and rushed her to the hospital. “I even tried to give her CPR, but she didn’t make it,” Singh revealed, asserting his desperate attempt to save her life.
He lamented how, almost overnight, he was “vilified” and publicly branded a “murderer.” “Even today, I am called a murderer,” he stated, explaining that the immense public outrage prevented him from even attending her last rites.
Following Pratyusha’s death, her parents filed a complaint against Singh, leading to charges including abetment of suicide, criminal intimidation, and voluntarily causing hurt. The official postmortem report cited the cause of death as asphyxia.
The legal process has been long and drawn out. In 2023, the sessions court in Mumbai rejected Singh’s plea for discharge from the case, noting that the statements of witnesses prima facie suggested he had made her life a “living hell.” The court highlighted initial evidence of alleged physical, emotional, and financial harassment that contributed to the actress’s depression.
Singh, however, maintains his innocence. He has consistently argued that the accusations are baseless and that the actress was in a disturbed mental state due to personal issues, including a toxic relationship with her own father, an allegation that has been a counterpoint in his defense. He is currently prepared to face the trial, insisting that the truth will ultimately be revealed in court.
Despite the court’s refusal to discharge him, the case remains a highly sensitive and contentious issue, with both parties holding firm to their claims. Rahul Raj Singh continues to fight a public and legal battle to clear his name, all the while dealing with the lasting impact of the tragedy and the title of “murderer” he insists he does not deserve.
