January 14, 2026 – In a surprising turn of events for Kollywood, the highly anticipated re-release of Thalapathy Vijay’s 2016 blockbuster, Theri, has been put on indefinite hold. Originally scheduled to hit screens on January 15, 2026, to celebrate its 10th anniversary and fill the void left by Vijay’s latest project, the film’s return has been postponed with no new date announced.
The news comes as a major blow to fans who were already reeling from the delay of Vijay’s upcoming (and potentially final) film, Jana Nayagan.
The decision to postpone Theri was not due to technical issues but rather a strategic move within the industry. Producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu of V Creations took to social media to clarify the situation, stating that the delay comes at the request of other film producers.
The fate of Theri has been closely tied to Jana Nayagan. When the latter faced a certification halt by the Madras High Court, Theri was brought in as a “festive treat” for fans. However, as the legal battle for Jana Nayagan moves to the Supreme Court, the sudden reshuffling of the theatrical calendar made a massive re-release for Theri logistically difficult.
For the “Thalapathy” faithful, this year’s Pongal (Sankranthi) feels unusually quiet. Social media has been flooded with mixed reactions; while some appreciate the producer’s professional courtesy toward other films, many expressed frustration over the lack of a Vijay release during the state’s biggest festival.
“As per the request from the producers of upcoming releases, we have decided to postpone the release of Theri,” confirmed the official statement from V Creations.
As of now, there is no new release date for Theri. Industry insiders suggest the makers might look for a special window in April 2026 to coincide with the actual 10th-anniversary month of the film’s original debut.
Meanwhile, all eyes are on the Supreme Court hearing scheduled for later this month, which will determine when audiences can finally see Vijay’s Jana Nayagan on the big screen.
