New Delhi, january 19, 2026: In a tragic incident that has sparked outrage across Greater Noida, a 27-year-old software engineer, Yuvraj Mehta, lost his life after his SUV plunged into a water-filled construction pit. While official rescue teams faced criticism for their delayed response, a Flipkart delivery agent named Moninder emerged as a hero, risking his own life in a desperate attempt to save the drowning techie.
The accident occurred around midnight on Friday, January 16, 2026, near Sector 150. Yuvraj was driving home from his office in Gurugram when dense fog reduced visibility to near zero. His car crashed through an unsecured boundary wall and fell into a 30-foot-deep pit dug for a building’s basement.
For nearly 90 minutes, Yuvraj clung to the roof of his partially submerged car. He managed to call his father, Rajkumar Mehta, pleading, “Papa, save me… I don’t want to die.” He even used his phone’s torch to signal rescuers through the thick fog.
Moninder, who was en route to deliver an order at 1:45 AM, noticed the crowd and stopped. He quickly realized that although the police, fire brigade, and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were on-site, no one had entered the water.
Witnesses and Moninder himself alleged that the responders hesitated, citing the freezing water temperature and the presence of submerged iron rods at the construction site.
“The boy had been shouting for help for over an hour. When I saw the responders weren’t going in, I asked if I could. I took off my clothes, tied a rope around my waist, and swam nearly 50 meters into the pit,” Moninder told reporters.
Despite searching the murky, freezing water for 30 minutes, Moninder could not locate Yuvraj or the vehicle. Tragically, it was later revealed that Yuvraj had submerged just 10 minutes before Moninder arrived.
The incident has led to a massive public outcry. Yuvraj’s father and local residents pointed out that a similar accident involving a truck had happened at the same spot just 15 days earlier, yet the Noida Authority had failed to install barricades or reflectors.
Current Status of the Case:
Yuvraj’s body was eventually recovered at 4:30 AM by the NDRF. While the techie could not be saved, Moninder’s selfless act has become a symbol of courage in a tragedy defined by administrative failure.
