New Delhi, February 14, 2026: A celebratory outing turned into a nightmare in the early hours of Saturday morning when a high-speed road accident claimed the lives of five young men and left two others fighting for their lives near Bhawar village in Sonipat district.

The incident occurred on the Gohana-Sonipat highway when a Mahindra Scorpio, reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control and slammed into a roadside tree. The impact was so severe that the vehicle was reduced to a mangled heap of metal, trapping the occupants inside.

Details of the Incident

According to local police reports, the group of seven friends was returning from a social gathering when the driver lost control of the vehicle. Eyewitnesses suggested that the SUV was traveling well above the speed limit. Upon hitting the tree, the vehicle flipped multiple times before coming to a standstill.

Local residents rushed to the spot after hearing a deafening crash and alerted the authorities. It took emergency responders and villagers nearly an hour to extract the victims from the wreckage using specialized cutting equipment.

Victims and Casualties

The deceased have been identified as residents of local clusters in and around Sonipat. Four of the victims died on the spot due to catastrophic head and chest injuries, while the fifth succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.

  • Deceased: Five individuals (names withheld pending official family notification).
  • Injured: Two survivors were rushed to the Bhagat Phool Singh Medical College in Khanpur Kalan. Due to their critical condition, they have since been shifted to a specialized trauma center in Rohtak.

Investigation Underway

The Sonipat Police have registered a case and initiated a forensic investigation into the cause of the crash. Preliminary findings point toward excessive speeding and a possible mechanical failure or a sudden attempt to avoid an animal on the road, though the former remains the primary lead.

Key Investigation Points:

  • Speed Analysis: Tire skid marks indicate the vehicle was significantly exceeding the 80 km/h limit for that stretch.
  • Visibility: Investigators are checking if low visibility or morning fog played a role.
  • Vehicle Condition: The wreckage will be examined to check for any prior malfunctions.

A Growing Concern

This tragic event has once again highlighted the rising number of fatalities on the connecting highways of Haryana. Authorities have urged drivers to adhere to speed limits, especially during late-night and early-morning hours when fatigue and reduced visibility increase the risk of fatal collisions.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination, and further legal proceedings are currently in progress.

Related Safety Tips:

  • Avoid Night Speeding: Reduced reaction times at night make high speeds lethal.
  • Seatbelt Compliance: Preliminary checks suggest not all occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of impact.
  • Designated Drivers: Ensure the person behind the wheel is well-rested and alert.
