New Delhi, March 11, 2026: While India’s historic triumph in the 2026 T20 World Cup remains the talk of the cricketing world, pacer Arshdeep Singh has faced disciplinary action following a heated exchange during the final. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially penalized the left-arm bowler for an incident involving New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The flare-up occurred during the 11th over of the New Zealand innings. After being struck for successive boundaries by Daryl Mitchell, Arshdeep Singh fielded a ball on his follow-through. In a moment of visible frustration, the 27-year-old pacer hurled the ball back toward the striker’s end.
While Mitchell was well within his crease, the throw was deemed unnecessary and struck the batter directly on his pads. The Kiwi vice-captain reacted furiously, advancing toward Arshdeep with animated gestures. The situation required immediate intervention from India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, and on-field umpire Richard Illingworth to prevent further escalation.
On Tuesday, the ICC confirmed that Arshdeep Singh has been fined 15% of his match fee for a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct. Specifically, he was found to have violated Article 2.9, which prohibits:
“Throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”
In addition to the financial penalty, one demerit point has been added to Arshdeep’s disciplinary record. This marks his first offense within the last 24-month period.
Despite the on-field friction, the two players appeared to settle the matter quickly. Arshdeep and Mitchell were seen shaking hands at the end of the over.
Following India’s commanding 96-run victory, Arshdeep offered a light-hearted explanation for the wayward throw, jokingly telling reporters that the ball had “too much reverse swing” and wasn’t intended to hit Mitchell. He also confirmed that he personally apologized to the New Zealand batter after the match.
The disciplinary note is a minor blemish on an otherwise flawless tournament for India. By defeating New Zealand, the “Men in Blue” achieved several historic milestones:
While Arshdeep will need to be cautious of his disciplinary record over the next two years, his role in India’s potent pace attack remains a cornerstone of the team’s ongoing success in the shortest format of the game.
