March 18, 2026 – In a decisive move to address the escalating vehicular density in Andhra Pradesh’s commercial hub, the Vijayawada City Traffic Police, under the direction of the NTR District Police Commissionerate, have launched a comprehensive “Decongestion Action Plan.” The strategy integrates high-tech surveillance, infrastructure optimization, and community-driven initiatives to ensure a smoother commute for the city’s residents.

Tech-Driven Surveillance: “Eyes in the Sky”

The cornerstone of the 2026 action plan is the deployment of advanced drone technology. To move beyond traditional street-level patrolling, the department has inducted a fleet of 14 high-definition drones. These “eyes in the sky” provide real-time aerial feeds to the Command Control Center, allowing officials to:

  • Identify immediate bottlenecks at major intersections like Benz Circle and MG Road.
  • Monitor illegal parking and unauthorized halts by auto-rickshaws that often choke arterial roads.
  • Track traffic violators and ensure swift response during peak-hour gridlocks or emergency situations.

Strategic Infrastructure and Transit Management

Recognizing that Vijayawada serves as a critical junction for National Highways (NH-16 and NH-65), the police are coordinating with the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) and NHAI on several key infrastructure fronts:

  • Junction Re-engineering: Major traffic hotspots are being redesigned to facilitate better flow. This includes the installation of EV charging stations at strategic points to organize the growing fleet of electric vehicles without disrupting traffic.
  • Flyover Utilization: Plans are underway to integrate road traffic with the proposed Vijayawada Metro Rail corridors, ensuring that elevated stretches are used effectively to bypass congested surface-level markets.
  • Heavy Vehicle Regulation: To prevent the “bottleneck effect” caused by freight traffic, the police have introduced stricter timing windows for heavy lorries entering the city, encouraging the use of bypass routes for transit cargo.

Community Involvement and “Traffic Soldiers”

Taking a leaf out of successful regional models, Vijayawada is exploring the “Traffic Soldier” initiative. This program encourages citizen volunteers—including retired professionals and students—to assist police personnel at busy intersections. These volunteers help regulate pedestrian movement and ensure that public transport vehicles adhere to designated bay areas, significantly reducing the burden on the core police force.

Addressing Seasonal Surges

The action plan also includes a dedicated “Special Event Protocol.” Following the massive congestion witnessed during recent festivals like Sankranti, the police have mapped out permanent diversion routes and temporary “one-way” zones that can be activated instantly via digital signages during high-inflow periods. This proactive approach aims to prevent the bumper-to-bumper traffic that typically plagues the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway.

With the city’s population and vehicle count on a steady rise, this evolved action plan represents a shift from reactive policing to a predictive, data-led traffic management system.
