Reflecting on her career timeline, Dutta acknowledged that while she had already made a mark on television with popular shows like Ek Duje Ke Vaaste and Haasil, transitioning to mainstream Bollywood was a steep uphill climb. Her early film outings, including a role in the Akshay Kumar-starrer Gold (2018), did not yield the personal breakthrough she had envisioned.
Everything shifted with Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Kabir Singh, where she played Jia Sharma, a Bollywood actress who crosses paths with Shahid Kapoor’s troubled protagonist. Despite being a secondary lead, the film’s massive box-office footprint ensured that even smaller roles were microscopic targets for public attention.
Dutta noted that the intense darkness of the film’s second half made her character stand out as a needed change of pace for the audience. The appearance served as a crucial “breakaway” moment. Almost overnight, the industry stopped viewing her strictly as a television actress and began evaluating her as a viable film lead.
The Ripple Effect of a Blockbuster
The commercial success of Kabir Singh fundamentally altered how casting directors and filmmakers approached her. It gave her the definitive industry validation she was searching for, leading directly to her securing her first major leading roles.
Following the film’s release, choreographer and director Bosco Martis requested a meeting with her immediately after watching her on screen, which led to her casting in Rocket Gang. She also emphasized that while shooting Kabir Singh, the cast and crew were completely focused on executing the director’s vision rather than predicting its ultimate box-office fate. Taking the project day by day allowed her to focus purely on the authenticity of her performance, which ultimately paid off when the film resonated with the masses.
Navigating the Pressures of the Industry
Coming from a non-filmy background—her father is a retired Rear Admiral of the Indian Navy—Dutta was starkly honest about the fiscal and mental strains of surviving in modern Bollywood. She addressed the exhausting financial realities that mid-tier actors face, particularly when industry-wide budget cuts occur.
According to Dutta, when production budgets shrink, it is the character actors and rising leads who bear the brunt of the financial adjustments, rather than the top-tier superstars. Yet, the expectations to maintain a highly polished, expensive, and picture-perfect public lifestyle remain unyielding.
This commitment to authenticity also shaped her experience working with acclaimed director Ram Madhvani on the historical project The Waking Of the Nation. Known for his documentary-style realism, Madhvani strictly prohibited her from using vanity or makeup on set. For someone who had been accustomed to regular grooming and public presentation since her Miss India 2012 pageant days, performing completely raw was an initial mental hurdle.
However, Dutta described it as an incredibly liberating experience. Embracing a “de-glam” avatar taught her to stop worrying about smudging makeup or looking flawless in front of the camera, allowing her to connect deeply with the raw emotion of the character.
