New Delhi, July 16, 2026 — In a powerful display of solidarity, acclaimed Rang De Basanti actor Atul Kulkarni has officially joined the ongoing hunger strike led by climate activist and educational reformer Sonam Wangchuk. Observing a one-day fast from his residence, Kulkarni urged citizens to pay close attention to the unfolding crisis, emphasizing that “it is essential for pain to connect with pain” (“Dard ka dard se rishta hona bohot zaroori hai”).

As Sonam Wangchuk’s indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar enters its 19th day, the intersection of Bollywood support and grassroots activism has cast a massive spotlight on the protest, prompting a dramatic rise in public and legal scrutiny.

“Dialogue is the Soul of Democracy”

In an emotional video address shared across his social media platforms, Atul Kulkarni announced his decision to observe a 24-hour fast on Thursday. The actor clarified that his decision was born out of two primary motivations:

  1. A Human Connection to the Struggle: “Firstly, I want to connect with the pain that Sonam ji and his associates are going through,” Kulkarni shared. He noted the severe physical toll the strike is taking on the protesters and expressed a desire to carry a fraction of that hardship himself. Mint+ 1
  2. A Plea for State Sensitivity: “Secondly, I want to request our government to show its sensitivity towards the matter”. Mint

While acknowledging that the administration and the protesters have fundamentally different viewpoints on the demands, Kulkarni expressed firm belief that the current deadlock is a consequence of communication failure rather than state apathy.

He capped his appeal by strongly urging the Union Government to initiate discussions “without delay” to de-escalate the tension.

The Core of the Protest: Examining the Demands

While Sonam Wangchuk is globally renowned for his environmental conservation efforts and educational reforms in Ladakh (serving as the real-life inspiration for Aamir Khan’s “Rancho” in the blockbuster 3 Idiots), this specific Delhi-based protest targets a massive national issue: the credibility of India’s national competitive examinations.

Wangchuk, operating alongside the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), launched his indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar to demand accountability following the widespread outrage, paper leaks, and systemic irregularities associated with the NEET-UG examination.

Health Alarms and Judicial Intervention

As the indefinite strike pushes past the two-and-a-half-week mark, medical experts have voiced alarming warnings regarding Wangchuk’s rapidly deteriorating physical state. Doctors monitoring the 59-year-old reformer revealed that he has already lost over 9 kilograms (nearly 20 lbs) since June 28.

Though his vitals show a stable pulse rate of 72 beats per minute and a blood sugar level of 80 mg/dL, medical personnel warn that entering the third week of a water-only fast puts him at immediate risk of acute muscle wastage and potential multi-organ complications. Despite his weakness, Wangchuk has refused to break his fast, questioning what a premature end would achieve if the government continues to remain silent.

In response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed over his critical condition, the Delhi High Court intervened, directing both the Central Government and the Delhi Administration to conduct comprehensive daily clinical health checks. The court ordered that immediate medical aid and nutritional intervention must be provided the moment his vitals drop below safe thresholds.

A Rising Tide of Cultural Support

Atul Kulkarni’s hunger strike is part of a broader, rapidly swelling wave of support from India’s cultural and creative community. Over the last fortnight, multiple cinematic and literary icons have lent their voices to the protest:

  • Prakash Raj was the first prominent industry figure to physically visit Jantar Mantar and stand alongside Wangchuk.
  • Sonakshi Sinha took to social media, sharing Wangchuk’s words (“I may even die, but I won’t step back”) and demanding, “How long will we remain silent?” The Indian Express
  • Veteran artists and filmmakers—including Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Zeenat Aman, Abhay Deol, Anurag Kashyap, Swara Bhasker, and Omi Vaidya—have released statements demanding immediate government outreach. Hindustan Times

By amplifying the protest, Kulkarni and his peers are bridging the gap between a regional educational crisis and the national conscience. With the Monsoon Session of Parliament starting on July 20, all eyes remain on Jantar Mantar to see if the government will heed Kulkarni‘s call for a democratic dialogue before the “Chalo Sansad” march begins.
