Chennai, Tamil Nadu: As Cyclone Fengal continues its westward march across the Bay of Bengal, the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are bracing for its impact. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for these areas, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds.
The cyclone is expected to make landfall near Puducherry on the afternoon of November 30, 2024. As of 11:00 AM IST, the cyclone is located about 100 kilometers southeast of Chennai.
Authorities in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have been taking precautionary measures to minimize the impact of the cyclone. Schools and colleges have been closed, and people have been advised to stay indoors. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed teams to affected areas. The Indian Coast Guard is also on high alert.
The cyclone has already disrupted transportation in the region. Several flights to and from Chennai airport have been canceled. Train services have also been affected.
