Behind several successful results in previous years, Nethra Kumanan was an obscure player in the Indian sporting community until yesterday. However, after word of her qualification for the Tokyo Olympics began to spread, the 22-year-old sailor has become an overnight sensation in the world.

Nethra Kumanan is the first Indian woman to qualify for the Olympics without competing in a qualifying event. To replace this same quota system that could not be filled, all nine Indians who had previously portrayed India throughout the sport at the Olympics decided to make this to the games.

Kumanan has been participating inside the Laser Radial section just at Mussanah Open Sailing Championship, another Asian and African Olympic qualification event. Kumanan is still in the first place since completing ten racing events throughout the category. She only plans to complete the Award Race here on the final day after the contest, Thursday, to be internationally competent again the for Tokyo Olympic games.
