Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma has openly discussed the rationale behind her taking on the primary caregiver role for her two children, daughter Vamika and son Akaay. In a recent interaction, the actress underscored the practical considerations that shaped this decision, emphasizing the nature of her and husband Virat Kohli’s respective professions.
Anushka, who has significantly reduced her film appearances since embracing motherhood, explained that her career as a self-employed individual offers her the flexibility to manage her work schedule. “I am self-employed, and I can decide when I am working if I do one or two films a year,” she stated. This autonomy allows her to prioritize her children, particularly in their formative years.
Conversely, she highlighted the continuous nature of Virat Kohli’s cricket career. “In Virat’s case, he plays round the year,” she said. This demanding schedule, which involves extensive travel and year-round commitments, makes it challenging for him to be the primary caregiver.
Despite this dynamic, Anushka emphasized that their approach to parenting is rooted in shared responsibilities and a collective family unit. “We don’t see it as mum and dad duties, but as a family unit. For us, it’s important that our child be raised with a very balanced outlook. It is all about shared duties,” she added. The couple believes that the quality time they spend together as a family is paramount, regardless of who shoulders the primary caregiving responsibilities at any given moment.
Anushka also touched upon the evolving societal norms and the importance of setting a balanced example for their children. “Times have changed. It’s important for children to look at their parents—they learn from you. And there is a sense of normalcy that both of us work. Of course, one will have to manage things differently and more efficiently to work,” she elaborated.
The couple has also maintained a strict stance on keeping their children away from the public eye and social media, a decision they’ve “thought about a lot” to ensure their kids have the autonomy to make such choices themselves when they are older.
Anushka and Virat welcomed their daughter Vamika in January 2021 and their son Akaay in February 2024. Their conscious efforts to balance their high-profile careers with a grounded and private upbringing for their children have often been praised by fans and media alike.
