Bajaj Auto, a prominent name in the Indian two-wheeler market, has introduced its much-anticipated Chetak 35 series electric scooter, aiming to redefine urban mobility with its blend of retro charm, modern technology, and enhanced performance. Available across three variants – 3501, 3502, and 3503 – the new Chetak series promises a range of smart features, a robust electric drivetrain, and an attractive starting price point.

Enhanced Range and Performance

At the heart of the Chetak 35 series lies a powerful 3.5 kWh IP67-rated lithium-ion battery pack, a significant upgrade from previous models. This larger battery translates into an impressive Indian Driving Cycle (IDC) certified range of up to 153 km on a single charge for the 3501 and 3502 variants, and 151 km for the 3503. This extended range makes the Chetak 35 series a practical choice for daily commutes and even occasional longer rides, addressing a key concern for potential electric scooter buyers.

Powering the Chetak 35 series is a 4kW electric motor, delivering a respectable top speed of 73 kmph for the 3501 and 3502 variants, and 63 kmph for the 3503. The scooter offers both Eco and Sport riding modes, allowing riders to switch between efficiency and performance as needed. Charging the 3.5 kWh battery from 0 to 80% is quick, taking approximately 3 hours for the 3501 variant (thanks to its 950W onboard charger) and 3 hours 25 minutes for the 3502 and 3503 variants.

Smart Features and Connectivity

The Chetak 35 series truly shines in its technological offerings, especially in its top-spec 3501 variant. This model boasts a vibrant 5.5-inch TFT touchscreen instrument console that elevates the riding experience. This touchscreen goes beyond basic information, offering integrated navigation maps, music control, and the ability to manage calls directly from the console. Users can also digitally store important documents like insurance and registration papers within the scooter’s display, adding a layer of convenience. Additional smart features include geo-fencing, anti-theft alerts, overspeed warnings, self-cancelling blinkers, auto hazard lights, and a reverse mode for effortless parking. The 3501 also comes with a unique key fob for easy location in crowded areas.

While the 3502 variant also features a colour TFT display, it foregoes the touchscreen functionality but retains many of the connectivity features, including turn-by-turn navigation (via an Annual Data Pack) and call/SMS alerts. The base 3503 variant features a reverse colour LCD instrument cluster, offering essential ride statistics.

Design and Practicality

Maintaining its distinctive retro-inspired styling, the Chetak 35 series introduces several practical enhancements for improved rider comfort and convenience. The new platform features an 80mm longer seat and a 25mm wider floorboard, offering better legroom and a more comfortable riding posture. A class-leading 35-litre under-seat storage space is a significant advantage, made possible by strategically placing the battery pack on the floorboard. The scooter also retains its durable full-steel body, a unique selling proposition in the electric scooter segment. All variants come with all-LED lighting and a USB charging port.

Pricing and Market Position

The Bajaj Chetak 35 series is positioned competitively in the burgeoning electric scooter market. The variants are priced as follows (ex-showroom):

  • Chetak 3503: Starting from around ₹1.09 Lakh
  • Chetak 3502: Starting from around ₹1.20 Lakh
  • Chetak 3501: Starting from around ₹1.32 Lakh

This pricing strategy aims to cater to a wider range of customers, from those seeking an affordable and reliable electric commute to those desiring a feature-rich, connected riding experience.

The Bajaj Chetak 35 series faces stiff competition from established players like the TVS iQube, Ola S1 series, and Ather Rizta. However, with its refreshed design, enhanced range, advanced smart features, and the trust associated with the Bajaj brand, the Chetak 35 series is well-equipped to carve out a significant share in the rapidly expanding Indian electric two-wheeler market. Deliveries for the 3501 variant commenced in late December 2024, followed by the 3502 in January 2025, marking Bajaj’s aggressive push into the future of sustainable personal transportation.
