Meerut, Uttar Pradesh – With the annual Kanwar Yatra drawing near, preparations in the Meerut Zone are in full swing, as confirmed by Additional Director General (ADG) Bhanu Bhaskar. A comprehensive review of arrangements is underway to ensure a smooth, safe, and spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage for the lakhs of devotees expected to participate.

ADG Bhaskar emphasized that detailed coordination meetings have been conducted with District Officers, Superintendents of Police, and all relevant stakeholders across the zone. Divisional Commissioner and DIGs have also held crucial discussions to streamline the extensive groundwork required for this significant religious procession.

Focus on Safety and Smooth Flow

A primary directive from the authorities pertains to the size and dimensions of the ‘jhaanki’ or tableaux carried by the Kanwariyas. ADG Bhaskar stated, “The length and width of the ‘jhaanki’ should be within the specified limits. Efforts will be made to ensure a comfortable journey for Kanwar pilgrims by making all the people coming on the road aware and by doing a thorough check.” This measure aims to prevent congestion and ensure the unhindered movement of pilgrims.

Security remains a top priority. Meetings are being held not just with the police department, but also with urban development and administration officials, and other departments to ensure preparedness for any unforeseen incidents, including medical emergencies. Comprehensive arrangements are being put in place to deal with any situation that may arise.

Historical Significance and Devotional Journey

The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage dedicated to Lord Shiva, where devotees, known as Kanwariyas, trek long distances, often hundreds of kilometers, carrying sacred water from the Ganges River. This water is then offered at Shiva shrines. According to Hindu beliefs, Lord Parshuram, an avatar of Lord Vishnu and a staunch devotee of Shiva, initiated this ancient procession. The pilgrimage symbolizes unwavering faith, penance, and a deep connection with the divine, attracting millions from across the country.

Key Measures and Public Cooperation

Beyond the structural and logistical planning, authorities are focusing on public awareness and cooperation. Information dissemination campaigns will be conducted to inform pilgrims about designated routes, safety protocols, and available facilities. The smooth execution of such a large-scale event relies heavily on the collective efforts of the administration and the active participation of the devotees.

As the holy month of Shravan approaches (expected to commence around July 11, 2025, with the Yatra concluding around July 23, 2025, or later depending on specific traditions), the Meerut Zone administration, under the leadership of ADG Bhanu Bhaskar, is leaving no stone unturned to facilitate a successful and secure Kanwar Yatra for all pilgrims.
