Breach of Security at CM’s Residence Sparks Outrage

New Delhi, August 20, 2025: Delhi CM Rekha Gupta was allegedly attacked during a weekly public grievance hearing at her official residence in the Civil Lines area. The incident, which has been widely condemned, occurred on Wednesday morning when the Chief Minister was being approached by citizens.

A man, said to be in his mid-30s, was taken into custody immediately after the incident. According to reports from the Delhi Police and eyewitness accounts, the accused had approached the Chief Minister under the pretense of submitting documents. He is then said to have shouted and attempted to assault her, with some sources claiming she was slapped. The man was quickly overpowered by the Chief Minister’s security detail and was taken to the Civil Lines police station for questioning.

The event, known as “Jan Sunwai,” is a regular public outreach program where the Chief Minister directly listens to the concerns of the populace. The attack has raised serious questions regarding the security arrangements at such events, especially at the official residence of a public figure.

Following the incident, the Delhi Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) released a statement confirming that an attempt had been made to assault the Chief Minister and that the accused had been apprehended. Delhi Police officials have stated that an inquiry has been launched to determine the full details of the incident and the motive behind the attack.

Political figures across party lines have been quick to condemn the assault. The Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) condemned the act, with Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva calling it a “serious breach of security” and demanding accountability. Similarly, Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav expressed his concern, stating that if the Chief Minister herself is not safe, the safety of common citizens is called into question.

The incident is being investigated, and further details regarding the accused and the circumstances of the attack are expected to be released by the police after the interrogation is completed. The Chief Minister was reportedly left in a state of shock, but her condition is said to be stable. This assault has brought the issue of security for public officials to the forefront and a review of the current protocols is expected to be carried out.
