Authorities at the high-security Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara in Bengaluru have launched a comprehensive investigation following a major security breach, exposed by a viral video showing an undertrial prisoner celebrating his birthday lavishly with fellow inmates. The video, which has circulated widely on social media platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram, has triggered massive public outrage and ignited fresh concerns over the alleged laxity and ‘VIP treatment’ within the correctional facility.
The inmate at the center of the controversy has been identified as Srinivasa, alias “Gubbachhi Seena,” a rowdy-sheeter lodged in the prison in connection with a murder case from earlier this year. The footage, believed to have been recorded inside his jail cell, shows Seena celebrating with a conspicuous flair. He is seen wearing a garland reportedly made of apples, surrounded by a group of cheering inmates, and using a large knife to cut a birthday cake.
The key point of alarm for both the public and law enforcement is the clear evidence of multiple severe prison rule violations. The presence of a cake, a large knife, and—most critically—a mobile phone to record and circulate the video, all strictly prohibited inside a maximum-security prison, points to profound lapses in security and supervision by the jail staff.
Initial reports suggest the celebration may have occurred several months ago, but the video recently surfaced on social media, prompting immediate action. The incident reportedly came to the attention of senior prison officials after a family member of the rival Seena is accused of murdering spotted the video online and submitted it to the authorities, demanding accountability.
Official Probe Initiated and Case Filed
Responding to the explosive video, Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) B. Dayananda immediately ordered a detailed, comprehensive inquiry into the matter. The probe aims to ascertain the exact timeline of the incident, identify the officials responsible for the security breach, and determine how prohibited items, including a knife and a mobile phone, were smuggled into the central prison premises.
In addition to the internal inquiry, the prison jailer has filed a formal complaint with the Parappana Agrahara police, seeking legal action against the undertrial and the other inmates involved. The police have registered a case and are investigating the chain of custody that allowed the prohibited items into the facility and facilitated the unauthorized party. Police sources have also reportedly identified at least ten other inmates present in the video.
Political Firestorm
The incident has quickly escalated into a political controversy. Opposition leaders, including former IPS officers, have publicly criticized the state government, citing the video as evidence of a “total collapse of law and order” and rampant corruption within the prison system. The current controversy brings renewed scrutiny to the Parappana Agrahara prison, which has faced allegations of preferential treatment to influential inmates in the past, underscoring the urgency for strict reforms and enhanced accountability.
