The Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and social media giant Meta Platforms Inc. (formerly Facebook) have officially incorporated their strategic joint venture (JV) to develop and market advanced enterprise Artificial Intelligence (AI) services. This monumental collaboration, first announced at RIL’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in August, cements a commitment for an initial combined investment of approximately ₹855 crore (roughly $100 million USD).
The newly formed entity, christened Reliance Enterprise Intelligence Limited (REIL), was officially incorporated in India on October 24, 2025. The JV is structured to leverage the complementary strengths of the two global behemoths: Meta’s cutting-edge, open-source AI models, most notably Llama, and Reliance’s extensive digital infrastructure and unparalleled market access across India’s vast enterprise landscape.
The ownership structure of REIL is firmly in Reliance’s hands, with its subsidiary, Reliance Intelligence Limited, holding a 70% majority stake. The remaining 30% stake is held by Facebook Overseas, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Meta. This move marks an aggressive strategic pivot by RIL to position itself as a major player in the global deep-tech space, building on its prior collaborations with Meta, such as the 2020 investment in Jio Platforms.
The primary mandate of REIL is to focus squarely on the “developing, marketing and distributing enterprise AI services.” This will involve two main product offerings:
The underlying technology for these solutions will draw heavily upon Meta’s open-source Llama models. Reliance will contribute its vast digital ecosystem, which is expected to enable the delivery of enterprise-grade AI at affordable price points. The goal is to “democratise enterprise-grade AI for every Indian organization,” as articulated by RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani, a vision that aligns with the Indian government’s push for sovereign, ‘Made-in-India’ digital solutions.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who addressed the RIL AGM virtually, emphasized the role of open-source AI in amplifying human potential and the ability of the partnership to put Meta’s Llama models to real-world use in a high-growth market like India. The solutions from REIL will be versatile, deployable across cloud, on-premises, and hybrid environments, with a strong focus on lowering the total cost of ownership for enterprises.
This joint venture signifies a major new chapter in India’s digital journey, leveraging the synergy between a global technology powerhouse’s AI expertise and an Indian conglomerate’s deep domestic reach to accelerate the nation’s digital transformation across multiple sectors.
