New Delhi, November 18, 2025: A deeply troubling video captured inside a government primary school in Chhattisgarh has caused widespread outrage after it showed a teacher writing blatantly incorrect English spellings on the blackboard.

The footage, which was widely circulated across social media, exposed the teacher instructing young students to memorize and copy words such as “Fader” for ‘Father’ and “Noge” for ‘Nose’. This shocking lapse in basic competency has raised serious questions about the quality of public education and teacher accountability in the state.

The video was recorded in a primary school in the Kogwar area of Balrampur district. The classroom session was focused on teaching the children basic English vocabulary, including parts of the body and family terms. In addition to “Noge” for ‘Nose’ and “Farder” for ‘Father’, other glaring errors were also committed. The word ‘Ear’ was transcribed as “Eare,” ‘Eye’ as “Iey,” and the days of the week were also taught incorrectly, with ‘Friday’ and ‘Saturday’ being written as “Farday” and “Saterday” respectively.

Students’ Future Compromised by Errors

The most alarming aspect of the viral footage was the sight of children diligently repeating and copying the severely misspelt words into their notebooks, relying entirely on the instruction that was provided by the teacher. This uncorrected learning is feared to compromise the students’ educational foundation, which is considered crucial in the early years of schooling.

Complaints were made by villagers, who have been repeatedly approaching the education department to report the poor standards, including another teacher who was alleged to frequently attend school while under the influence of alcohol.

The video was quickly brought to the attention of higher officials within the Education Department. Swift action was subsequently taken against the teacher, identified as Praveen Toppo (Assistant Teacher LB) from Primary School Machandand Kogwar. The teacher was immediately suspended by the authorities, with the lapse being categorized as a severe negligence that threatens the future of the students. A detailed investigation into the systemic failures has been ordered by the District Education Officer.

Systemic Gaps and Call for Reform

The incident is not viewed as an isolated case but rather as a stark indicator of systemic issues concerning teacher training, recruitment standards, and quality control within government schools across the region. Educational experts have voiced strong opinions that the basic language skills of educators must be rigorously assessed and must be continuously monitored. The problem of unqualified teachers is seen as a major hurdle that must be overcome if rural students are to be provided with an equitable chance at success.

The public outcry that was fueled by the viral video has successfully placed immense pressure on the state government to enforce robust monitoring mechanisms. The Education Department is now expected to implement stricter assessments and refresher training programmes to prevent similar educational lapses in the future. The replacement of the suspended teacher with a qualified educator has been prioritized to ensure the children’s learning is not further disrupted.
