November 22, 2025: A pall of grief has fallen over the aviation world following the tragic crash of an Indian Air Force (IAF) Tejas fighter jet during an aerial display at the Dubai Air Show on Friday. The Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), an estimated 6,500 kg machine, was executing a complex maneuver when it suddenly lost altitude, nosedived, and slammed into the ground at Al Maktoum International Airport. The impact resulted in a massive explosion and fireball, sending shockwaves through the crowd of spectators.

The Indian Air Force swiftly confirmed the accident and announced the fatal injury of the pilot, Wing Commander Namansh Syal. The IAF released a statement expressing profound regret over the loss of a “brave and courageous” officer and offered firm support to the bereaved family.

Investigation Underway

The precise cause of the crash, which occurred around 2:10 p.m. local time on the final day of the biennial show, is currently unknown. The IAF has immediately ordered a Court of Inquiry to thoroughly investigate the incident.

Early reports and aviation experts viewing crash footage have suggested the jet may have failed to recover from a challenging acrobatic move known as a “negative G-turn.” This maneuver subjects the pilot to extreme forces, and any miscalculation or technical issue at low altitude can have catastrophic consequences. Other possibilities being considered by experts include a sudden loss of engine power or a control malfunction. The recovery of the jet’s “black box” will be crucial to determining the exact sequence of events.

A Blow to India’s Indigenous Program

The Tejas, which means ‘Radiance’ in Sanskrit, is a source of national pride for India, representing its indigenous defence manufacturing capability. The aircraft has been displayed internationally to showcase its advanced features and handling. This is only the second known crash involving the Tejas since its induction into the IAF, the first being a non-fatal accident in 2024.

The tragedy in Dubai, witnessed by an international audience, comes as a setback for India’s efforts to promote the jet for potential export orders. The final day of the air show was temporarily halted as emergency teams secured the site before resuming later with a reduced flying schedule.
