December 1, 2025: A routine Sunday evening turned into a horrific tragedy in Tamil Nadu’s Sivaganga district when two state-run buses collided head-on, killing at least 11 people and leaving more than 50 injured. The devastating crash, which occurred on November 30, 2025, near Tirupattur, has sent shockwaves across the state and renewed concerns over highway safety.
The accident took place around 5:00 PM near Vivekananda Polytechnic College on the Tirupattur–Karaikudi main road. One bus, belonging to the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, was travelling from Kangeyam to Karaikudi, while the other government bus was on the Karaikudi–Dindigul route.
The impact of the head-on collision was so severe that it instantly crumpled the front sections of both large vehicles, trapping numerous passengers. Initial reports suggest that nine women were among the deceased, highlighting the disproportionate impact of the tragedy on female passengers. Tragically, the initial death toll included a child and eight people who died at the scene. Three more seriously injured individuals later succumbed to their wounds at the Tirupattur Government Hospital.
Immediately following the crash, local residents, police personnel, and Fire and Rescue Service teams rushed to the site to begin a frantic rescue operation. They worked to pull victims out of the mangled wreckage.
The injured passengers, totaling over 50, were quickly transported to various medical centres, including government hospitals in Karaikudi, Tirupattur, Sivaganga, and Pudukottai, with some critical patients being moved to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai for advanced care. Health officials are continually monitoring those admitted, with two seriously injured individuals already transferred for specialised treatment.
A preliminary investigation points towards a possible driver error as the cause of the fatal collision. Sources suggest that the driver of one bus may have swerved suddenly to avoid hitting a person attempting to dart across the busy state highway, leading the vehicle to cross the median and crash directly into the oncoming bus.
The route where the accident occurred is generally a straight, two-way stretch of road, which suggests that factors like high speed, driver fatigue, or momentary lapse of attention could have played a critical role. Police have registered a case and an in-depth inquiry is underway to determine the exact sequence of events that led to this catastrophic loss of life.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed deep shock and sorrow over the incident. He immediately deployed the Sivaganga District Collector and District In-Charge Minister K.R. Periyakaruppan to the accident site to oversee relief operations and ensure the injured received high-quality medical support.
The Chief Minister announced a financial compensation package to support the affected families:
President Droupadi Murmu also offered her condolences, expressing grief over the loss of lives in the tragic accident and praying for the swift recovery of those injured.
The repeated occurrence of such severe bus accidents, coming just days after a similar fatal crash in the Tenkasi district, has underlined the urgent need for a renewed focus on road safety and stricter enforcement of driving discipline across the state’s public transport system.
