New Delhi, December 29, 2025: A renewed focus on Mumbai’s road safety protocols has been triggered following the circulation of a viral video documenting a reckless auto-rickshaw ride in Andheri. On December 27, 2025, a video began trending on X (formerly Twitter) showing an auto-rickshaw navigating the late-night streets near Andheri East with alarming disregard for traffic norms. The vehicle was observed swerving sharply across lanes and driving at high speeds, narrowly missing other motorists and pedestrians who were out during the post-midnight hours.

Reckless Stunts and Public Alarm

The footage, reportedly captured by a passenger in a trailing vehicle, showcased the auto-rickshaw driver performing dangerous maneuvers on the Western Express Highway stretch. The driver was seen leaning halfway out of the vehicle while steering, a stunt that has become a worrying trend among some commercial drivers seeking social media attention. This “stunt-driving” behavior in one of the city’s busiest suburban hubs has caused significant alarm among residents, who have been heard calling for stricter night-time patrolling and an immediate crackdown on such life-threatening displays.

Enforcement and Identification Efforts

The Mumbai Traffic Police was alerted to the incident after the video was tagged to their official handle multiple times. An investigation was initiated on December 28, 2025, to identify the vehicle using the registration number visible in the high-definition clip. It was reported by officials that technical surveillance and CCTV footage from the Andheri-Kurla Road are being scanned to trace the driver’s route. Authorities have emphasized that such actions fall under “dangerous driving” and can lead to the immediate suspension of the driver’s permit and a permanent ban on their commercial license.

A Pattern of Traffic Violations

This latest incident is being viewed as part of a larger, more volatile month for Mumbai’s roads. Earlier in December, another viral incident involving a BJP MLA slapping an auto driver for wrong-side driving in Ghatkopar highlighted the growing frustration over traffic indiscipline. While the MLA’s actions were condemned, the underlying issue of auto-rickshaws frequently violating one-way rules and performing stunts remains a focal point for the city’s transport department. It was noted by civic activists that without consistent “fear of the law,” the roads of Andheri will continue to be a playground for reckless behavior.

Intensified Vigil for the New Year

As 2026 approaches, the Mumbai Police have announced an intensified vigil across major junctions, including Andheri, Bandra, and Juhu. Over 10,000 personnel are being deployed to monitor drink-driving and reckless stunts during the New Year’s Eve celebrations. The public has been urged by the Traffic Police to continue reporting such incidents via their dedicated WhatsApp helpline. The message remains firm: the safety of commuters is paramount, and those found turning public roads into arenas for viral stunts will be met with the full force of the law.
