New Delhi, January 5, 2026: A wave of public indignation has been sparked in the historic city of Lucknow following the emergence of a highly disrespectful video. On January 3, 2026, footage began circulating on social media depicting a man allegedly urinating against an ancient wall inside the Bhool Bhulaiya (the famous labyrinth) of the Bada Imambara. The 18th-century monument, which is recognized globally for its architectural brilliance and religious sanctity, was seen being defiled in broad daylight, leading to immediate demands for the perpetrator’s arrest.
Official cognisance of the viral clip was taken by the Lucknow Police after it triggered widespread outrage among heritage enthusiasts and the local Shia community. It was reported that an FIR has been lodged at the Chowk Police Station against an unidentified individual. The case was registered under Section 298 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to “injuring or defiling a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class.” The complaint was formally moved by the caretaker of the Imambara complex, who described the act as a “shameful blot” on the city’s culture.

The identification of the suspect is currently being pursued through a detailed analysis of CCTV footage from the Bada Imambara premises and surrounding entry points. Station House Officer (SHO) Nagesh Upadhyay noted that although the viral video is somewhat unclear, technical teams are working to establish the exact time and date of the incident. This lapse has also raised serious questions regarding the security protocols managed by the Hussainabad and Allied Trust (HAT), as critics pointed out that such an act went unnoticed by on-site guards until it appeared on the internet.
The desecration of the Bhool Bhulaiya has been condemned by religious leaders and citizens alike, who view the Bada Imambara as a symbol of Lucknow’s inclusive Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb. Members of the community were observed protesting the lack of stringent monitoring at protected monuments, stating that the “sanctity of the Imambara has been breached.” Many netizens have urged the authorities to not only arrest the individual but also impose a permanent ban on his entry into any historical or religious site in India to set a firm precedent against vandalism.
As the investigation continues, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of India’s heritage sites to “reel-culture” and public apathy. It was remarked by historians that the Bhool Bhulaiya is not merely a tourist spot but a living piece of history that requires communal respect. The Lucknow administration has been requested to increase the number of security personnel and high-definition cameras within the maze to ensure that such “uncivilized behavior” is never repeated. For now, the city waits for the “unidentified youth” to be brought to justice as 2026 begins with a call for better heritage preservation.
