New Delhi, March 25, 2026: Kia has officially expanded its electric vehicle lineup with the global launch of the Kia EV2, a subcompact electric SUV designed to make sustainable mobility more accessible. Unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show, the EV2 arrives as the brand’s smallest and most affordable “born-electric” model to date. With a starting price of €26,600 (approximately ₹24 lakh) in European markets like Germany, it positions itself as a formidable competitor in the rapidly growing budget EV segment.

The EV2 is the sixth model built on the Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform), joining its larger siblings like the EV6 and EV9.

Design and Dimensions: Compact Outside, Spacious Inside

Measuring just 4,060 mm in length with a 2,565 mm wheelbase, the Kia EV2 is designed for urban maneuverability without sacrificing interior utility.

  • Exterior: The SUV follows Kia’s “Opposites United” design philosophy, featuring a boxy, upright silhouette. It incorporates the signature “Tiger Face” front and “Star Map” LED lighting. Depending on the trim, wheel sizes range from 16 to 19 inches.
  • Interior Flexibility: Despite its small footprint, the cabin offers class-leading legroom (up to 958 mm). A unique four-seater configuration is available alongside the standard five-seater, featuring independent reclining and sliding rear seats.
  • Storage: The boot space offers 362 liters, expandable to 403 liters with the seats moved forward. Additionally, a 15-liter “frunk” under the hood provides extra storage for charging cables or small items.

Performance and Range: Two Battery Options

Kia offers the EV2 with two distinct battery chemistries to cater to different driving needs:

  1. Standard Range: Equipped with a 42.2 kWh LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery, this variant delivers a WLTP-certified range of up to 317 km. It is powered by a 147 hp front-mounted motor.
  2. Long Range: This version features a larger 61 kWh NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) battery, pushing the range up to 448 km (or up to 453 km in specific trims). Interestingly, the long-range model uses a slightly more efficient 136 hp motor to maximize distance.

Charging Technology

To keep costs competitive, the EV2 utilizes a 400V architecture instead of the premium 800V system found in the EV6.

  • DC Fast Charging: Both battery packs can charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes.
  • AC Charging: In a segment-first, the EV2 supports both 11 kW and 22 kW AC charging. The 22 kW option allows for a full home charge in just 2.5 to 3 hours, significantly faster than most rivals.

Advanced Technology and Features

The EV2 does not compromise on tech. It introduces the ccNC Lite infotainment system, featuring a triple-screen layout:

  • 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
  • 12.3-inch central touchscreen.
  • 5.3-inch dedicated climate control panel.

Standard safety and convenience features include a Level 2 ADAS suite, over-the-air (OTA) updates, and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, allowing the car to power external electronic devices. Higher trims like the GT-Line add premium touches such as a Harman Kardon sound system and Remote Smart Parking Assist.

India Launch Prospects

While currently focused on Europe, the Kia EV2 is a strong candidate for the Indian market given the rising demand for compact electric SUVs. If launched in India, it would likely rival the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400. Experts suggest that local assembly could bring the price down to the ₹15–20 lakh range, though Kia India has yet to make an official announcement regarding a domestic debut.

Production for the standard variants is already underway at Kia’s Zilina plant in Slovakia, with the Long Range and GT-Line models expected to enter production in June 2026.
