DHONew Delhi, July 15, 2026 — The upcoming Dholera International Airport, a cornerstone of India’s first greenfield smart city project, has entered its final stretch of development. Following a high-level on-site progress review, Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu announced that 80% of the overall construction work has been completed. The central government is aggressively targeting September or October 2026 for the commencement of formal commercial operations, aiming to complete the remaining tasks within a strict three-month window.

The ministerial review, which included Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha and senior representatives from the Gujarat government and the Airports Authority of India (AAI), concluded that the airfield’s heavy infrastructure is fully prepared.

Current Construction Milestones

While overall development stands at the 80% mark, the project’s airside infrastructure is already completely built. The primary structures responsible for handling flight routing, landings, and ground movements have hit 100% completion:

  • Airfield & Runway: The primary 3,200-meter Code 4E runway and adjacent taxiways are fully built, designed to support wide-body passenger and cargo aircraft.
  • Air Traffic Control (ATC): The architectural shell and supporting ancillary buildings for the ATC tower have reached absolute completion.
  • Passenger Terminal: The state-of-the-art terminal building is currently 75% complete.

Understanding the Scale: Phase 1 Specifications

The first phase of the greenfield project is mapped out to handle both heavy industrial freight and passenger traffic seamlessly. Spanning over a massive allocation of land near Navagam village, the airport’s current infrastructure footprint consists of two main processing centers:

The First India-Made Commercial Aircraft Hub

Minister Naidu highlighted that Dholera is breaking new ground by acting as a unified “aerotropolis”—a community where the layout, infrastructure, and economy are centered around an airport. The complex is uniquely integrated with the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR), a futuristic green city, and an expanding semiconductor cluster.

In a massive push for domestic aerospace engineering, a formal agreement has been finalized between Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer and Adani Aviation Systems. The collaboration will establish a Final Assembly Line (FAL) right inside the Dholera airport complex to manufacture India’s very first civilian “Make in India” commercial aircraft. The joint venture aims to roll out its first completed aircraft by the year 2028.

Furthermore, the complex will host dedicated, specialized hangars for the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) of the C-295 military transport aircraft, which are currently being produced under the Airbus-Vadodara defense partnership. This moves Dholera beyond a simple transit point, establishing it as a critical industrial node for high-value technology, electronics manufacturing, and global aerospace investments.

Seamless Multi-Modal Connectivity

A major selling point of the Dholera project is how it connects with existing regional transit lines. Located roughly 100 kilometers from Ahmedabad, travelers will not feel isolated due to high-speed transit integration. The airport will link directly to the six-lane Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway via a dedicated approach road.

More importantly, it is linked closely with a massive high-speed rail corridor project. Backed by a recently approved Cabinet allocation of ₹20,667 crore for regional rail infrastructure, a dedicated train station is being constructed immediately adjacent to the airport terminal. This architectural integration allows a passenger traveling from the heart of Ahmedabad to disembark from a high-speed train and walk straight into the airport terminal building without requiring secondary road transit.

Relieving Pressure on Ahmedabad

Historically, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad has carried the bulk of Gujarat’s international passenger and cargo weight, operating consistently close to its maximum capacity limits. Dholera International Airport is strategically designed to function as a crucial second gateway for the broader Ahmedabad-Dholera industrial belt.

By diverting a significant portion of heavy commercial logistics, export-import freight, and long-haul international flights to Dholera, the regional aviation network will experience drastically improved efficiency. Multinational corporations setting up manufacturing bases in the smart city—such as Tata Group’s major upcoming semiconductor fabrication plant—will reap the immediate benefits of reduced logistics costs and rapid supply chain turnaround times.

What Lies Ahead Before Launch?

While structural execution has moved smoothly, travelers and logistics firms should note that a construction timeline is distinct from a finalized airline flight schedule. The remaining 20% of work involves finishing interior outfitting, safety integrations, and check-in counters within the passenger terminal. Following construction conclusion in September, the airport must successfully complete strict technical licensing procedures, navigation equipment calibrations, and trial flights overseen by the DGCA.

Government officials remain highly optimistic that the rigorous testing and regulatory sequences will clear in time to hit the October launch target. Once operational, Dholera will stand as a model for modern, integrated infrastructure, demonstrating how aviation can trigger massive, long-term industrial and economic growth across the nation.
