New Delhi, July 16, 2026 — The historic city of Ahmedabad transformed into a sea of spiritual ecstasy early Thursday morning as the 149th annual Jagannath Rath Yatra officially commenced. Marked by deep-seated traditions, vibrant colors, and immense religious fervor, the massive procession began its journey from the nearly 400-year-old Shree Jagannathji Mandir in the Jamalpur locality. Regarded as the second-largest Rath Yatra in India after the world-famous festival in Puri, Odisha, this annual event draws hundreds of thousands of eager devotees from across Gujarat and neighboring states, establishing itself as a pinnacle of community harmony and cultural heritage.

Amit Shah Participates in the Sacred Mangala Aarti

The spiritual proceedings kicked off well before the break of dawn, precisely at 4:00 AM, with the performance of the highly sacred Mangala Aarti. Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, keeping with his long-standing personal and familial tradition, attended the early morning ritual alongside his family members to seek the divine blessings of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra.

The atmosphere inside the temple garbha griha (sanctum sanctorum) was electric, charged with the rhythmic clanging of bells, the blowing of conch shells, and deafening chants of “Jai Ranchhod, Makhan Chor” resonating from thousands of gathered devotees. Dressed in traditional attire, the Home Minister offered prayers for the peace, prosperity, and welfare of the nation. Following the completion of the aarti, the deities were offered a special bhog consisting of khichda—a traditional dish prepared specifically for the festival. Taking to social media shortly after the ritual, Shah extended his heartfelt wishes to citizens, emphasizing that the world-famous Rath Yatra remains an unbroken symbol of faith, trust, and community integration.

The Symbolic Cleansing: Pahind Vidhi

As dawn broke over Ahmedabad, the focus shifted to the temple courtyard, where the grand chariots stood waiting. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, performed the highly anticipated Pahind Vidhi. This centuries-old symbolic ritual requires the state’s top political leader to use a custom-made golden broom to sweep the path clean ahead of the moving chariots.

The act underscores the philosophical premise that even the highest authority figures are humble servants before the Lord. Once the path was ceremonially cleansed, the Chief Minister officially flagged off the grand yatra, pulling the ropes of Lord Jagannath’s chariot to initiate the procession amid massive cheers from the crowd.

A Spectacular 16-Kilometer Visual Journey

The three majestic wooden chariots carry the beautifully adorned idols of Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Lord Balabhadra, and their younger sister Devi Subhadra out of their divine abode to embark on Nagar Charya—a tour of the city to bless citizens directly. The grand procession travels along a meticulously mapped 16-kilometer traditional route winding through the narrow, historic lanes of the Old City, passing through key neighborhoods like Khadia, Kalupur, Saraspur, and Dariapur before returning to the temple late in the evening.

The scale of the 149th Rath Yatra is staggering, featuring:

  • 101 decorated trucks carrying vibrant cultural tableaus (jhankis) depicting various religious themes and social messages.
  • 30 Akhadas (traditional fitness and martial arts schools) displaying breathtaking feats of physical strength, gymnastics, and ancient weapon play.
  • 18 Bhajan Mandalis (devotional singing groups) alongside dynamic folk-dance troupes that infuse the air with spiritual music and dance.
  • Caparisoned elephants leading the way, perfectly reflecting the royal heritage of the centuries-old celebration. Newsonair

One of the emotional high points of the journey is the traditional stopover at Saraspur, affectionately regarded as the Mosal (maternal uncle’s house) of the deities. Here, the entire neighborhood unites to host a massive community feast, serving lunch to hundreds of thousands of participants and visitors in an unparalleled display of collective hospitality.

High-Tech, Zero-Risk Security Management

Given the immense crowd density and the route’s movement through communally sensitive zones of the old city, the state administration left absolutely nothing to chance. Implementing a stringent “Zero-Risk” security approach, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel personally supervised a series of high-level preparation reviews ahead of the festival.

The security paradigm for this year’s Rath Yatra integrated a powerful mix of heavy manpower and cutting-edge surveillance technology:

Furthermore, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) executed extensive civic upgrades along the route, resurfacing over 2,800 meters of road, repairing footpaths, and thoroughly clearing drainage manholes to prevent structural issues. Crucially, civic authorities issued safety notices to dilapidated heritage structures along the route, wrapping vulnerable buildings in protective green nets and tin sheets to prevent spectators from gathering on unsafe balconies.

Fostering Communal Harmony

Beyond the sheer scale of the security apparatus, the true success of the Ahmedabad Rath Yatra lies in its profound social fabric. Weeks prior to the festival, the Ahmedabad City Police facilitated 69 Peace Committee meetings and 79 Mohalla Committee meetings. These interactive platforms brought together religious elders and community leaders from diverse backgrounds to reinforce peace and mutual respect along the mixed-neighborhood route.

To build stronger interpersonal bridges among the youth, the city organized creative community outreach events including blood donation camps, night cricket and volleyball matches, cultural Lok Dayros, and interactive dialogues with Gen-Z citizens. As the golden chariots continue their slow, majestic roll through the historic heart of Ahmedabad, the shared enthusiasm of the citizens stands as a living testament to the region’s rich tapestry of absolute devotion, structural safety, and unbroken communal harmony.
