India Yamaha Motor (IYM) Pvt. Ltd. is celebrating a remarkable dual milestone at its state-of-the-art Chennai factory, marking a decade of operational excellence and the rollout of its five millionth two-wheeler. This significant achievement underscores the plant’s pivotal role in Yamaha’s global manufacturing network and its unwavering commitment to the “Make in India” initiative.

The momentous five millionth unit to roll off the production line was a sleek Yamaha Aerox 155 Version S, symbolizing the company’s focus on performance-oriented and high-value-added products. Since its inception in 2015, the Chennai facility has rapidly evolved into a cornerstone of Yamaha’s global operations, serving both the robust Indian domestic market and a growing array of international export destinations.

Mr. Itaru Otani, Chairman, Yamaha Motor India Group of Companies, emphasized the strategic importance of the Chennai factory within Yamaha’s worldwide manufacturing ecosystem. “This facility exemplifies our unwavering focus on people, processes, and products – driven by skilled employees, synchronized operations, and a strong commitment to global quality standards,” he stated. He extended his heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated workforce, vendor partners, and loyal customers who have been instrumental in this journey.

The Chennai plant, spread across 177 acres, operates on a unique integrated model, with 109 acres dedicated to IYM and the remaining 68 acres allocated to co-located vendor partners. This innovative “One Factory” approach fosters seamless synchronization, enhancing manufacturing efficiency, speed, and supply chain integration. This integrated ecosystem has made the Chennai factory one of Yamaha’s most advanced manufacturing facilities globally.

Over the past decade, the plant has consistently undergone upgrades to align with Yamaha’s evolving premium product strategy, focusing on high-value-added motorcycles and scooters with small to mid-range engine displacements. Beyond catering to the Indian market, the Chennai facility has become a crucial export hub, with over 30% of its total output being shipped to diverse international markets including Europe, Latin America, and ASEAN countries. It produces a wide range of models for export, including the FZ series, the Saluto range, and the Alpha scooter, alongside hybrid scooter models like the RayZR 125 Fi and Fascino 125 Fi, and the Aerox 155 for the domestic market.

Furthermore, Yamaha’s Chennai plant is a testament to sustainable and smart manufacturing practices. It boasts an installed solar power capacity of 4450 kW, significantly reducing its carbon footprint. The facility also incorporates state-of-the-art infrastructure for zero-water discharge and wastewater recycling/reuse, and its buildings are designed for maximum utilization of natural sunlight and compatibility with solar power systems. These initiatives underscore Yamaha’s long-standing commitment to environmental responsibility.

As Yamaha commemorates these twin milestones, the Chennai plant stands as a powerful symbol of the brand’s long-term commitment to manufacturing excellence in India, reinforcing its position as a trusted exporter of world-class two-wheelers. The company has affirmed its dedication to continued progress, with the Chennai factory poised to play a crucial role in addressing the evolving demands of both Indian and international customers in the years to come.
