Following in the footsteps of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has also announced the suspension of all Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and collaborations with educational institutions in Turkey. This significant decision comes amidst escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, fueled by Turkey’s perceived support for Pakistan in recent conflicts.

The move by Jamia Millia Islamia signifies a strong stance of solidarity with the Indian government and armed forces. Professor Saima Saeed, the Public Relations Officer for JMI, confirmed the development, stating to news agencies, “We have suspended all MoUs with institutions affiliated with Turkey. Jamia stands with the nation and the Government of India. 1 Everything remains suspended until further notice.”

This decision follows closely after JNU suspended its academic agreement with Inonu University in Malatya, Turkey, citing national security concerns. JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit had openly criticized Turkey’s support for Pakistan, stating that such actions “cannot be ignored.” The MoU between JNU and Inonu University, signed on February 3, 2025, was intended to foster academic exchange and collaboration for three years.

The recent surge in tensions is reportedly linked to Turkey’s condemnation of India’s “Operation Sindoor” following a terror attack in Pahalgam and concerns over the alleged use of Turkish-made drones by Pakistan. These developments have triggered widespread calls for boycotts of Turkish products and services within India.

Several reports suggest that other Indian universities are also reviewing their academic partnerships with Turkish institutions, indicating a potential broader impact on educational collaborations between the two countries. Additionally, travel platforms have reportedly issued advisories against non-essential travel to Turkey, reflecting the public sentiment.

The suspension of these academic ties by prominent Indian universities underscores the sensitivity of the current geopolitical climate and the prioritization of national security concerns in academic collaborations. The long-term implications for Indo-Turkish academic relations remain to be seen, but the immediate impact is a clear disruption of existing partnerships and a chilling effect on future collaborations.
