New Delhi, March 2, 2026: The 2026 awards season took a dramatic and unpredictable turn on Sunday night at the 32nd Annual Actor Awards (formerly the SAG Awards). In a ceremony that many expected to be a coronation for season frontrunners, Ryan Coogler’s vampire epic Sinners emerged as the night’s titan, walking away with the prestigious Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture trophy.

However, the headline of the night belonged to Michael B. Jordan, who pulled off a stunning upset by defeating Timothée Chalamet to claim the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.

A Night of Major Upsets

For weeks, the industry narrative had centered on Timothée Chalamet’s transformative turn in Marty Supreme. Having already secured a Golden Globe and a Critics Choice Award, Chalamet was widely considered the “one to beat.”

But the Screen Actors Guild—a voting body composed of over 160,000 fellow performers—chose to honor Michael B. Jordan for his dual role as the twins Smoke and Stack in Sinners. Jordan’s win is being hailed as a “seismic shift” in the Oscar race, providing him with critical momentum just two weeks before the Academy Awards on March 15.

‘Sinners’ Dominates the Ensemble Category

The victory for Sinners in the Ensemble category marks a historic moment for director Ryan Coogler, who becomes the first filmmaker to lead two different casts to an Ensemble win (following Black Panther in 2019).

The film, a socially-conscious horror-thriller set in the Jim Crow-era South, beat out a crowded field of heavyweights, including:

  • One Battle After Another (Paul Thomas Anderson)
  • Hamnet (Chloé Zhao)
  • Marty Supreme (Josh Safdie)
  • Frankenstein (Guillermo del Toro)

Veteran actor Delroy Lindo, accepting on behalf of the cast, described the project as “anointed,” noting the deep chemistry and shared vision of the ensemble.

In the television categories, Apple’s The Studio dominated the comedy field, with Seth Rogen winning Best Male Actor and the late Catherine O’Hara receiving a moving posthumous award for Best Female Actor.

What This Means for the Oscars

Historically, the Actor Awards serve as the most reliable bellwether for the Oscars. With Sinners taking the Ensemble prize and Michael B. Jordan winning Lead Actor, the “locked” status of several categories has been officially unlocked.

Jordan’s victory creates a fascinating “overdue” narrative for the actor, while Sinners—which also recently saw Coogler win a historic BAFTA for Original Screenplay—is now a formidable challenger to Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another for Best Picture.
