The much-awaited romantic comedy sequel, De De Pyaar De 2, has officially kick-started its promotional campaign by dropping its first-look motion poster, instantly setting the stage for a fresh dose of chaos, laughter, and the eternal clash between love and family approval. Reprising their roles, Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh return as Ashish and Ayesha, respectively, with their unconventional age-gap romance now facing its next formidable hurdle: winning over Ayesha’s parents.
The motion poster, shared by Ajay Devgn himself, is an amusing hint at the film’s central conflict. It features a comedic visual of Rakul Preet Singh’s on-screen family seemingly attempting to throw Ashish out of a moving vehicle, perfectly capturing the theme of familial rejection. Devgn’s caption sums up the sequel’s high stakes: “Pyaar ka sequel hai crucial! Kya Ashish ko milega Ayesha ke parents ka approval? (The sequel of love is crucial! Will Ashish get Ayesha’s parents’ approval?) #PyaarVsParivaar.”
While the first installment of De De Pyaar De (2019) focused on the 50-year-old Ashish (Devgn) convincing his estranged wife, children, and own parents about his relationship with the 26-year-old Ayesha, the sequel flips the script. Ashish, who is now a 52-year-old London-based investor, must travel to India to confront Ayesha’s family and secure their blessing.
A major element of excitement is the casting of R. Madhavan as Dev Khurana, Ayesha’s father. The sequel’s plot reportedly hinges on a humorous but challenging rivalry—a ‘hilarious one-upmanship’—between Ashish and Dev, especially since Ashish is notably older than Ayesha’s father himself. This premise of an older hero desperately trying to impress his much-younger girlfriend’s family, particularly a disapproving parent, immediately draws parallels with other memorable Bollywood films.
The narrative structure of the sequel, where the central conflict shifts to the hero’s struggle for the young heroine’s father’s approval, strongly reminds audiences of the 2007 romantic-comedy, Cheeni Kum. That film, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Tabu, saw a 64-year-old chef trying to convince a 58-year-old father (played by Paresh Rawal) to accept his relationship with his 34-year-old daughter. The humour in both films stems largely from the generational gap and the awkward power dynamics within the family unit.
In De De Pyaar De 2, the presence of R. Madhavan as the father-of-the-bride adds a fresh, contemporary face-off against Devgn, promising a new flavour to the familiar comedic trope. The ensemble cast also grows, with actors like Meezaan Jafri, Gautami Kapoor, Ishita Dutta, and Jaaved Jaaferi joining the mix, ensuring that the sequel offers double the fun and drama.
Directed by Anshul Sharma and written by Luv Ranjan and Tarun Jain, the film aims to deliver another light-hearted entertainer. With the ‘Pyaar Vs Parivaar’ battle lines drawn, fans are eagerly awaiting the trailer, which is expected to release shortly, to get a bigger peek into the dynamics between Ashish and his potential new father-in-law.
