New Delhi, July 4, 2026: The latest espionage thriller from Aditya Chopra’s marquee franchise, Alpha, hit theatres worldwide on Friday, July 3, 2026. Headlined by Bollywood superstar Alia Bhatt and rising action star Sharvari, the film was touted as a historic milestone—marking the first-ever female-led installment in the Yash Raj Films (YRF) Spy Universe. However, despite massive pre-release hype and a sprawling release across 7,534 shows nationwide, the movie’s opening day numbers have come as a stark wake-up call for trade analysts and the studio alike.

According to early trade estimates provided by industry tracker Sacnilk, Alpha minted approximately ₹9 crore net at the domestic box office on Day 1. The film’s total gross collection in India stands at around ₹10.80 crore, with international circuits contributing another ₹5 crore. This brings its total opening day worldwide gross to nearly ₹15.80 crore. While these figures might seem respectable for a mid-budget actioner, they represent the single lowest opening day haul in the history of the high-octane YRF Spy Universe.

Understanding the Sluggish Box Office Turnout

The multi-franchise Spy Universe has traditionally been synonymous with earth-shattering, record-breaking openings. For context, Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan (2023) continues to lead the pack with a staggering ₹57 crore net on its first day. Even the most recent entry before this, the Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR-led War 2, comfortably cruised to a massive ₹52 crore opening day haul despite receiving a highly polarized response from audiences.

When measured against those gargantuan benchmarks, Alpha’s ₹9 crore domestic start highlights a significant dip in pre-release momentum. Trade experts point to sluggish advance bookings as the primary indicator of this muted response. The film registered a modest net advance booking of just ₹1.58 crore before its theatrical release, signaling that a large section of the audience preferred a “wait-and-watch” approach.

The theatrical occupancy rates across the country mirrored this hesitation, averaging a relatively quiet 20.40% on Friday. Morning shows saw poor footfalls at just 9.92%, though the film witnessed an upward trajectory as the day progressed. Driven primarily by urban multiplexes, evening shows registered a 19.69% occupancy, while night shows saw the highest engagement of the day at 34.15%.

A Mixed Bag of Critical and Audience Reactions

The initial wave of audience and critical word-of-mouth has been divided, which heavily impacted the day-one business. Directed by Shiv Rawail, who previously helmed the critically acclaimed streaming series The Railway Men, Alpha attempts to tell a gritty origin story of an elite assassin trained in isolation who eventually breaks away from her handlers.

Many viewers took to social media to criticize the film’s writing, stating that a weak, predictable script ultimately compromised the tension essential to a high-stakes spy thriller. A section of the audience also expressed that the screenplay failed to build a convincing narrative arc for its lead characters, drawing unfavorable comparisons to older, more tightly paced espionage hits.

On the flip side, the film has drawn considerable praise for its technical ambition, slickly choreographed action set-pieces, and overall scale. Alia Bhatt’s high-octane entry scene, in particular, has become a major talking point online, with fans calling it a masterclass in cinematic screen presence. Additionally, the highly anticipated special appearance of Hrithik Roshan—reprising his iconic character Kabir from the War films—delivered the loudest cheers in theatres, proving yet again the immense pulling power of the franchise’s interconnected lore.

Stiff Competition in the Theatrical Arena

Alpha is also facing a challenging competitive landscape at the box office. Instead of enjoying a clear, uncontested run, the spy actioner is battling it out with strong holdover titles and alternative releases. Most notably, Akshay Kumar’s comic caper Welcome to the Jungle continues to display phenomenal endurance in its second week, racking up nearly ₹98 crore net domestically by its eighth day.

According to trade insights, several independent exhibitors and single-screen owners are aggressively prioritizing Welcome to the Jungle over Alpha for the prime-time slots, moving swiftly to cater to family audiences who prefer lighthearted entertainment over intense action. Furthermore, Sharvari find herself in the unique position of competing against herself, as her other feature, Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapis Aaunga, is also retaining a notable chunk of screens across multiple multiplex chains.

The Silver Lining and the Road Ahead

Despite the underwhelming comparison to its Spy Universe predecessors, it is not all gloom for the team behind Alpha. When viewed outside the shadow of the franchise’s historic records, the film’s opening day collection actually marks a solid personal improvement for its primary lead. Alia Bhatt’s previous theatrical outing, the 2024 action-thriller Jigra, opened to a modest ₹4.55 crore net before concluding a difficult box office run. By almost doubling that figure on its first day, Alpha serves as a much stronger showcase for Bhatt’s draw as an action star.

With a star-studded cast that includes Bobby Deol playing a formidable antagonist and Anil Kapoor playing a critical intelligence ally, the production house is heavily relying on the weekend crowds to turn the tide. Historically, action films driven by massive star power can experience massive surges on Saturday and Sunday if regular moviegoers find the entertainment quotient satisfactory.

For Alpha, the ultimate test lies ahead. Whether the film can stabilize its collections, overcome the mixed word-of-mouth, and utilize its premium weekend pricing to stage a meaningful recovery remains to be seen. Industry eyes will remain locked on the Saturday and Sunday footfalls to determine if the YRF Spy Universe’s first female-led mission can find its footing or if it will face an uphill battle to secure theatrical profitability.
