Actor Pranav Mohanlal has once again captured the media’s attention, not only for his latest box office success, the horror film Dies Irae, but also for his characteristic departure from Kerala immediately following the release. The star, known for his intensely private life and love for travel, appears to be resuming his low-profile routine, a practice his mother, Suchitra Mohanlal, says fans have finally accepted.

A Star Who Masters the Art of Absence

The release of director Rahul Sadasivan’s Dies Irae last Friday, which opened to strong critical acclaim and commercial success, marked a significant professional achievement for Pranav. Critics have hailed his performance as his best to date. However, true to his established pattern, the actor was recently spotted leaving the state, forgoing the usual promotional blitz that accompanies a hit film.

Pranav Mohanlal, the son of Malayalam cinema legend Mohanlal, has long maintained an unconventional and non-conformist approach to his career. He often avoids the spotlight, shuns typical celebrity promotions, and takes extended breaks between projects to travel the world. His previous breaks have included working on a farm in Spain, caring for animals in exchange for food and accommodation—experiences he values more than material wealth

“One Film Every Two Years”: The New Normal

Speaking at the premiere of Dies Irae, Suchitra Mohanlal addressed her son’s highly selective filmography and his long periods away from the industry. She noted that this work rhythm is now a familiar pattern for his followers.

“I think people have gotten used to this from him now. They know that he is like that and will do only one film every two years. They are used to this way. He has just returned from somewhere, so I don’t know when the next film will happen.”

She had previously remarked on the rarity of his films, stating, “If he were making films the whole time, there would be nothing special about it. But in his case, in two years, he will only do one film. So it’s almost like a first film every year he comes out with a movie. It’s very special to me.”

Admiration from His Father

Pranav’s unique path has been consistently supported by his father, Mohanlal, who has often expressed pride in his son’s independent spirit. The veteran actor once confessed his own youthful desire to wander the world, an ambition Pranav is now realizing. “I feel happy seeing him accomplish things that I never got to do in my life. He is travelling a lot, he is living a free life, and also doing films from time to time,” Mohanlal had stated.

This cycle of intense artistic focus followed by a retreat into a globe-trotting lifestyle has cemented Pranav Mohanlal’s image as one of the most enigmatic and anti-promotional stars in Indian cinema. While fans eagerly await news of his next project, it seems they must now settle into the two-year routine, confident that his return will coincide with another carefully chosen, high-quality film.
