New Delhi, january 06, 2026: In a significant milestone for Indian cinema, the nation’s official entry for the 98th Academy Awards, Homebound, has officially advanced to the Top 15 shortlist in the Best International Feature Film category. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced the shortlist on January 6, 2026, keeping the Indian hopeful firmly in the race among a select group of global titles.
Directed by the National Award-winning filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan—the visionary behind Masaan—Homebound has been a favorite since its domestic release. The film stars Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa in the lead roles, with Janhvi Kapoor appearing in a pivotal performance.
The story, which follows the dreams and struggles of childhood friends Shoaib and Chandan as they navigate the complexities of their social landscape, has resonated deeply with international critics. The film’s inclusion in the shortlist is a major boost for India, especially after last year’s entry, Laapataa Ladies, narrowly missed the final cut.
Out of the 85 countries that submitted entries this year, only 15 have moved forward to the next round of voting. Homebound finds itself in the company of heavyweights from world cinema, including:
Adding to the film’s global momentum, legendary director Martin Scorsese recently praised the project, appearing in a promotional clip alongside Ghaywan to discuss the film’s “raw, uncompromising artistry.”
Reaching the shortlist is a massive achievement, but the journey to the “Golden Statue” is far from over. Here are the key dates to watch:
