In a striking display of collective financial power and shrewd business acumen, members of the Gujarati Jain community, under the banner of the Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO), recently executed a colossal group purchase of luxury automobiles. This single initiative resulted in a massive haul of 186 high-end cars across India, collectively valued at a staggering ₹149.54 crore (approximately $18 million USD).
The unprecedented luxury car acquisition, while national in scope, saw a significant portion of the buyers hailing from Gujarat, particularly Ahmedabad, further solidifying the state’s reputation for its enterprising spirit and knack for negotiation.
The key to this whopping purchase was the strategic use of ‘community buying.’ By pooling their orders for 186 cars—ranging in price from ₹60 lakh to ₹1.34 crore each—JITO members managed to secure an impressive total discount of ₹21.22 crore.
Himanshu Shah, Vice-Chairman of JITO Apex, highlighted the mechanics behind this success. “Community buying gives us power to bargain harder,” he explained. “Brands benefit from assured volumes and lower marketing costs, while members get savings. In this drive alone, members bought luxury cars worth ₹149.54 crore, saving ₹21.22 crore collectively.”
JITO, which boasts a membership of over 65,000 across India, actively collaborated with dealers representing approximately 15 top luxury brands, including Audi, BMW, and Mercedes. This consolidated approach allowed the organisation to negotiate far more favourable terms than any individual buyer could hope to achieve.
The success of the luxury car drive has inspired JITO to formalise this collective purchasing strategy. The organisation has now established a dedicated vertical focused on community purchasing, with plans to expand group deals to a wide array of other product categories, including electronics, medicines, and jewellery.
Interestingly, this trend of collective economic strategy is not exclusive to the Jain community in Gujarat. The example has already resonated with other communities in the region. The Bharwad community, through the Bharwad Yuva Sangathan Gujarat, embraced the concept for an empowerment initiative, pooling orders for 121 JCB machines to boost self-employment among their youth. By securing an average discount of ₹3.3 lakh per unit, they collectively saved around ₹4 crore. Crucially, the community stood as a guarantee for repayment, allowing youth with weaker credit scores to get the heavy machinery with zero down payment.
The mega luxury car deal by the Jains is more than just a headline-grabbing purchase; it represents a powerful illustration of how established, cohesive communities in Gujarat are leveraging their collective strength to create significant economic advantage for their members. Whether for high-end automobiles or essential industrial equipment, the principle remains the same: in the fiercely competitive world of business, collaboration drives the best deals.
