The popular quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati 17 found itself at the centre of a social media storm after a recent episode featuring young contestant Ishit Bhatt. The fifth-grade student from Gandhinagar, Gujarat, was trolled relentlessly online for his “overconfident” and allegedly “rude” demeanor towards the show’s host, Amitabh Bachchan.
The controversy began when clips of Ishit’s interaction with the megastar went viral. In one widely circulated segment, the young contestant told Mr. Bachchan, “Mere ko rules pata hain isiliye aap abhi mereko rules samjhaane mat baithna” (I know the rules, so there’s no need to explain them to me now). His assertive tone continued as he repeatedly urged the host to “lock” his answers and, at one point, questioned the difficulty of a question, saying, “Yeh koi sawaal hai puchne ka?” (Is this even a question worth asking?).
The online reaction was divided but largely critical. Many netizens slammed the child, labeling his actions as disrespectful and a reflection of poor manners, with some even extending the criticism to his parents for a perceived lack of proper upbringing. However, a significant number of voices, including playback singer Chinmayi Sripaada and former Bigg Boss contestant Rajiv Adatia, came out in defense of the young boy, calling the massive backlash a form of public bullying and excessive trolling of a child who was likely overexcited or nervous on a national platform.
The debate further intensified when Ishit, despite his initial confidence, ultimately answered a question incorrectly and left the show without any winnings. Mr. Bachchan, handling the situation with his characteristic composure, remarked, “Kabhi kabhi bachhe over confidence mein galti kar dete hai” (Sometimes children make mistakes due to overconfidence), a comment that was widely praised by viewers. The incident has sparked a broader national conversation about the line between confidence and arrogance in children, and the role of social media in harshly judging young participants on reality television.
In a far more alarming piece of news, comedian Kapil Sharma’s restaurant, Kap’s Cafe in Surrey, Canada, was targeted by gunfire for the third time in a troubling series of attacks since its launch earlier this year. The latest incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Thursday, with multiple shots fired at the establishment, causing damage to the facade and windows.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as the cafe was closed at the time. The repeated attacks have raised significant security concerns and have been linked by authorities to a wider issue of extortion targeting business owners in the region, particularly within the South Asian community in Surrey.
Following the shooting, a social media post allegedly from associates of the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack. The post, which could not be independently verified, warned the “general public” to stay away from the premises and contained threatening language.
This marks the third time the cafe has been attacked since its opening in July, following previous shooting incidents in July and August. The Surrey Police Service (SPS) is investigating the matter, which has drawn international attention and prompted local authorities to step up efforts to combat organized crime in the area. The recurrence of the violence has left the community and fans of the popular comedian deeply concerned.
