The much-anticipated romantic-comedy, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, starring Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor, saw a moderate start at the domestic box office, netting an estimated ₹9.25 crore on its opening day in India.

The film, directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced under the banner of Dharma Productions, hit theatres on October 2nd, a holiday release coinciding with Dussehra and Gandhi Jayanti. While the opening collection falls short of the coveted double-digit mark often aimed for by big-budget Bollywood releases, it aligns within the pre-release box office predictions of an ₹8–10 crore start for the romantic genre.

A Decent Start Amidst Stiff Competition

The opening day performance of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari (SSKTK) is considered a decent outing, particularly given the intense box office competition it faced. The film shared its release date with the pan-India mythological epic, Kantara: Chapter 1, which recorded a massive opening across the country.

Industry analysts have pointed out that the romantic-comedy genre, post-pandemic, has generally struggled to hit blockbuster opening numbers unless backed by exceptional hype. However, SSKTK‘s collections are a positive sign for the film’s lead actors. For Janhvi Kapoor, the opening figure of ₹9.25 crore surpasses the first-day collection of her previous film, Param Sundari, which had opened at ₹7.25 crore.

Occupancy and Regional Trends

According to industry trackers, the film recorded an overall occupancy rate of approximately 32.45% on its opening day. Footfalls saw a clear increase in the latter half of the day, with evening and night shows driving the major collections, a typical trend for films relying on positive word-of-mouth.

Regional figures highlighted variances in audience turnout. Southern markets, despite fewer total shows, registered some of the highest occupancy rates, with Chennai leading at around 58%, followed by Bengaluru. Key metros like Mumbai and the National Capital Region (NCR) also contributed solid numbers to the film’s collection.

The Road Ahead

With a long holiday weekend ahead, the box office trajectory for Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari will heavily depend on audience reception and word-of-mouth over the next few days. The film, which also features an ensemble cast including Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf, will be aiming for significant growth on Saturday and Sunday to establish a strong cumulative weekend total. The hope is that the light-hearted tone and family-friendly appeal of the romantic-comedy will attract broader audiences in the coming days, helping it cross the double-digit mark in its second and third day collections.
