New Delhi, April 21, 2026 – A serene Sunday afternoon at the Gurdwara Singh Sabha in the city of Moers, North Rhine-Westphalia, turned into a scene of chaos and violence this weekend as a pre-meditated confrontation left at least 11 people injured. The incident, which involved an estimated 40 individuals, triggered a large-scale police response, including the deployment of elite tactical units.
Authorities confirmed that the situation escalated rapidly inside the religious premises, with witnesses reporting the use of multiple weapons, including pepper spray, knives, traditional kirpans, and a suspected firearm.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the violence was not a spontaneous outburst but appeared to be a coordinated act. According to a 56-year-old congregant, the attack began shortly before the scheduled prayer service.
“It must have been planned,” the witness told local German media. “Shortly before the service began, the attackers suddenly used pepper spray to disorient their opponents. Then, one of them fired a pistol. I also saw knives.”
As the situation deteriorated, worshippers fled the building in panic. Videos circulating on social media captured the intensity of the brawl, showing scenes of disorder within the prayer hall, with turbans scattered and weapons drawn. Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene, where they treated 11 individuals, primarily for head wounds. Thankfully, no life-threatening injuries were reported.

The scale of the reported violence—specifically the mention of gunfire—prompted an immediate and heavy-handed response from German law enforcement. Approximately 100 officers were deployed to the area, including the specialized Spezialeinsatzkommando (SEK) tactical units from Düsseldorf.
Police sealed off the Gurdwara complex amid fears of an active shooter. Heavily armed officers stormed the building to secure the premises, while a police helicopter provided aerial surveillance. While no gunman was located inside, authorities recovered cartridge casings at the scene, suggesting the weapon used may have been a blank-firing pistol. At least one suspect has been detained, and police have launched a comprehensive investigation to reconstruct the events and identify other participants.
Preliminary findings from investigators and testimonies from the community suggest the conflict is rooted in a long-standing, bitter internal dispute over the management of the Gurdwara.
Reports indicate that tensions have been simmering for months between the current management committee and former members who were recently voted out. The friction is believed to center on control over the institution’s administration, influence within the community, and the management of golak (community donation) funds.
“The background is a dispute between former committee members and the current ones,” a witness explained to local press. “There have been problems and trouble for quite some time. But mainly it’s about influence and who has the say here at the temple.”
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Sikh community in Germany and beyond. Many have taken to social media to express their dismay and condemnation, describing the violence as a betrayal of the values of compassion and service that the institution is intended to uphold.
“Sikhs fighting inside a Gurdwara, turbans in the air, and kirpans—which are meant to protect the weak—turned on each other,” noted one community observer.
As police continue their probe into both the violent brawl and the governance issues at the heart of the conflict, the local community remains shaken, grappling with the impact of such an unprecedented confrontation in a sacred space.
