New Delhi, November 20, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cautionary alert for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as an active cyclonic circulation has developed over the Bay of Bengal, with weather conditions projected to deteriorate significantly starting from November 21. Residents, tourists, and maritime operators are urged to exercise extreme caution as the system is expected to bring widespread heavy rainfall and severely rough sea conditions to the archipelago.

Intensifying Weather Pattern

According to the latest bulletin from the IMD, the cyclonic circulation is poised to intensify further as it moves across the region. The forecast indicates that this will trigger a spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall across the Nicobar group of islands, with heavy downpours also anticipated for the Andaman Islands.

The island territories are also likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. Surface wind speeds are expected to reach a velocity of 35-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph over the Andaman Sea. The IMD’s forecast further suggests that wind intensity may escalate over the south Andaman Sea, where squally weather could see wind speeds ranging from 45-55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph in the coming days.

Marine and Safety Warnings

The primary concern is the escalating sea state. The IMD has warned that sea conditions are likely to be rough, prompting the hoisting of a Local Cautionary Signal-3 at Port Blair Port.

  • Fishermen Advisory: In light of the squally weather and rough seas, fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the Andaman Sea until at least November 23. This restriction is crucial to prevent accidents involving small vessels, which are highly vulnerable to the anticipated high winds and surging waves.
  • Boats and Tourism: Due to the possibility of surging waves along the coastlines, the local administration has advised boat owners, islanders, and tourists to navigate with utmost vigilance. Furthermore, all non-essential recreational maritime activities are strongly discouraged until the weather system passes.
  • Travel Disruption: The inclement weather is expected to have a direct impact on transportation. The Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS) has proactively informed the public that both mainland/inter-island and foreshore sector vessel sailings are highly likely to be rescheduled or cancelled at very short notice. The Directorate emphasized that passenger and vessel safety remains their top priority.

Administration on High Alert

Local authorities are on high alert, taking proactive steps to minimize the impact of the adverse weather. Residents in low-lying and vulnerable areas are being monitored, and all necessary safety guidelines are being reinforced.

The continuous watch by the IMD and the proactive measures by the local administration are essential to ensure the safety of the population and the delicate maritime ecosystem. The public is strongly requested to monitor official advisories, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, and follow all safety instructions issued by the local disaster management teams.
