New Delhi, August 30, 2025: Banks across India will be closed for up to 15 days in September, as per the Reserve Bank of India’s holiday calendar. However, it’s important to note that this doesn’t mean all banks in all states will be closed for a full fortnight. The number of holidays varies significantly from state to state, with closures being observed for a combination of national festivals, regional celebrations, and regular weekend breaks.

The holidays are classified into three categories by the RBI: Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) Holiday, and Bank’s Closing of Accounts. The state-specific holidays are determined by the local significance of festivals, which can result in different bank closures across the country. Therefore, it is strongly advised that customers check the specific holiday list for their respective regions before planning any branch visits.

A few of the prominent holidays in September will be Karma Puja, which will see banks closed in Jharkhand on September 3. On September 4 and 5, Onam celebrations will be observed in Kerala, leading to bank closures. A number of states will observe a holiday on September 5 and 6 for Id-E-Milad, which is also known as Milad-un-Nabi. Additionally, the festival of Durga Puja will result in bank closures in several states toward the end of the month, specifically on September 29 and 30, for Maha Saptami and Maha Ashtami respectively.

In addition to these festival-specific holidays, all banks across the nation will be closed on the second and fourth Saturdays, as well as all Sundays of the month. The second and fourth Saturdays fall on September 13 and September 27. The Sundays are on September 7, 14, 21, and 28. These regular weekend closures will be uniform throughout India.

While physical bank branches will remain inaccessible on these dates, customers can still conduct most of their banking transactions through online channels. Services such as mobile banking, internet banking, and ATMs will be available 24/7. Digital payments via Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will also be unaffected by the holidays. The closures will only impact physical banking operations and will not affect the digital financial infrastructure that has been built to support a cashless economy.
