New Delhi, December 27, 2025: A fresh wave of indignation has been ignited in Bengaluru following the circulation of a viral video documenting a tense confrontation between a motorist and a traffic police officer. In the footage, which was widely shared on December 25 and 26, 2025, a resident identified as Mahendra was observed being subjected to alleged verbal abuse and intimidation by an officer in the Devanahalli area. The incident has been described as a “worst-case example” of high-handedness, highlighting the ongoing friction between the city’s commuters and law enforcement.
The ordeal was detailed in a viral social media post where the victim recounted the aggressive behavior of the officer. According to the account, Mahendra was stopped for a traffic violation and had already accepted the official challan for the offense. However, instead of concluding the procedure, the officer was observed snatching the bike keys in the middle of a busy road. It was alleged that the policeman used abusive language and openly mocked the rider, claiming to be the only person who could “allow” him to leave, regardless of the fine paid.

The confrontation reportedly escalated beyond verbal sparring into claims of blatant extortion. The victim stated that he was taken to the police station and allegedly pressured to pay an additional ₹3,000 to secure his release. In the viral clip, the officer was observed behaving with significant arrogance, even making obscene hand gestures toward the camera when he realized he was being recorded. This display of unprofessionalism has been cited by thousands of netizens as a clear indicator of a “toxic policing culture” that prioritizes ego over law enforcement.
The Bengaluru City Police were forced into action as the video amassed millions of views and drew the attention of high-profile citizens. A spokesperson for the department confirmed that the video has been taken into cognizance and that the DCP (Traffic North) is currently investigating the matter. It was stated by the authorities that “accountability and respect must go hand-in-hand” and that strict disciplinary measures will be initiated if the officer is found guilty of misbehavior or extortion. This follows a string of similar incidents in 2025 that have led to the suspension of multiple officers for manhandling civilians.
As the year 2025 draws to a close, this incident has renewed calls for the mandatory use of body-worn cameras for all on-duty traffic personnel. It is being argued by activists that such technology is essential to protect both citizens from harassment and officers from false accusations. The Devanahalli episode remains a focal point for public frustration, serving as a reminder of the urgent need for structural reforms and better behavioral training within the city’s police force.
