January 24, 2026 – Bengali actor and BJP MLA from Kharagpur Sadar, Hiraanmoy Chattopadhyay (popularly known as Hiraan Chatterjee), has found himself at the center of a legal and political firestorm. His first wife, Anindita Chatterjee, has filed a formal First Information Report (FIR) against him at the Anandapur police station, accusing the actor of bigamy and domestic cruelty.
The controversy was ignited on January 20, 2026, when photographs of Hiraan’s purported second wedding surfaced on social media. The images, which were briefly posted on Hiraan’s own profile before being deleted, showed the MLA and model Ritika Giri performing traditional Hindu wedding rituals on the ghats of Varanasi.
Anindita Chatterjee, who has been married to Hiraan since December 11, 2000, appeared before the police flanked by her 19-year-old daughter, Niyasa. She made several explosive claims:
“I was humiliated and heartbroken to learn of my husband’s wedding through social media posts. Hiraan cheated on me repeatedly, but I kept forgiving him since I did not wish to end the marriage,” Anindita told reporters.
Ritika Giri, a model and fitness enthusiast, countered the allegations via her social media. She stated that:
Ritika challenged Anindita to take legal steps if she believed the union was unlawful, asserting that nothing about their relationship had been hidden from the public or the family.
The most poignant part of the saga has been the reaction of Hiraan’s daughter, Niyasa. A psychology student, Niyasa expressed deep trauma, revealing she found out about her father’s “new life” through screenshots sent by friends while she was returning from college.
“My father should have been the person to break the news… For me, my father can only be married to my mother,” she said, visibly distraught.
The Kolkata Police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), specifically under sections related to marrying again during the lifetime of a spouse and cruelty. While an inquiry has been launched, Hiraan Chatterjee has remained largely unreachable for an official comment, though his political and film industry colleagues have expressed shock at the sudden public fallout.
