New Delhi, December 27, 2025: A wave of civic outrage was triggered in Lucknow this week following the reported theft of thousands of decorative flower pots. The incident occurred shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Rashtra Prerna Sthal on December 25, 2025. In viral videos circulating across social media, local residents were observed calmly walking away with potted plants that had been meticulously arranged to beautify the city for the high-profile event. The memorial, built to honor former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was observed to be the primary target of this unexpected “souvenir” hunt.

The Viral ‘Gamla Chori’ Caught on Camera

The brazen nature of the theft was captured in multiple clips that have since amassed millions of views. In the footage, people were observed stopping their vehicles, including cars and scooters, to load the decorative pots. One particularly widely shared video featured a man on a two-wheeler, holding a party flag while attempting to balance several pots on his lap. It was noted by frustrated onlookers and netizens that the individuals involved appeared to be from economically stable backgrounds, leading to a heated debate about the “poor mindset” of the urban middle class.

Lucknow Development Authority’s Response

The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has confirmed the scale of the loss, stating that over 4,000 flower pots were missing from the venue and surrounding roads. Officials from the horticulture department revealed that nearly 7,000 plants worth approximately ₹10 lakh were looted within 24 hours of the ceremony. In response to the viral evidence, the LDA vice-chairman has directed the filing of an FIR (First Information Report) against those identified in the videos. To prevent further losses, authorities were seen manually shifting the remaining 30,000 pots to the safety of Lohia Park.

A Repeated Lapse in Public Ethics

This incident has been viewed by sociologists as a distressing repeat of past behaviors observed during international events like the G20 summit. It was argued in several online forums that the lack of fear of legal consequences has emboldened citizens to treat public property as “free loot.” The irony of people stealing from a memorial dedicated to national pride was highlighted by many as a significant failure of civic responsibility. Despite the heavy police presence during the event, the theft was observed to have taken place in broad daylight, often right under the noses of security personnel.

The Call for Stricter Accountability

As the year 2025 draws to a close, the “Lucknow Gamla Chori” has become a symbol of the struggle between infrastructure development and civic behavior. Demands for the use of CCTV footage to issue fines directly to the offenders have been echoed across digital platforms. It is being emphasized by city planners that while grand memorials can be built with government funds, the preservation of public beauty depends entirely on the integrity of the citizens. The incident remains a focal point for calls to introduce stricter penalties for the vandalism and theft of public assets.
