India and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their commitment to a robust strategic partnership, with high-level talks held in New Delhi focusing on deepening cooperation across a wide array of sectors. The discussions, which included the 17th India-UK Foreign Office Consultations and the inaugural Strategic Exports and Technology Cooperation Dialogue, underscore the growing convergence of interests between the two nations.
Led by India’s Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, and Sir Oliver Robbins, Permanent Under-Secretary at the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the delegations reviewed the substantial progress made since their last consultations in London. A key highlight was the welcoming of the recently concluded India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and a Double Contribution Convention, poised to significantly boost bilateral trade and investment. The FTA alone is projected to increase bilateral trade by £25.5 billion and add £4.8 billion to the UK’s GDP in the long run.
The inaugural Strategic Exports and Technology Cooperation Dialogue marked a significant step towards enhanced collaboration in critical technological and defense sectors. This dialogue aims to foster a mutual understanding of systems and identify future avenues for cooperation, particularly in areas like advanced defense technologies, cyber security, and space. Both sides expressed a strong ambition to facilitate greater technology cooperation, including addressing export controls.
Beyond trade and technology, the extensive talks covered a broad spectrum of bilateral relations. Key areas of focus included:
- Defence and Security: Strengthening cooperation in defense and security, including counter-terrorism efforts. India conveyed its appreciation for the UK’s solidarity and support in the fight against terrorism.
- Economic Growth: Strategies to further strengthen trade, investment, and the financial sector, building on the momentum of the FTA.
- Green Energy and Climate Change: Exploring avenues for collaboration in green energy, climate action, and sustainable development. This builds on existing initiatives like the Accelerating Smart Power & Renewable Energy in India (ASPIRE) programme and the UK-India Offshore Wind Taskforce.
- Science, Innovation, and Health: Deepening partnerships in science, innovation, health, and education, leveraging shared research and development strengths to address global challenges.
- People-to-People Relations: Enhancing cultural and educational exchanges, including initiatives like the Young Professional Scheme, which facilitates movement for graduates between the two countries.
The delegations also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, including developments in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Indo-Pacific, and West Asia, highlighting their shared commitment to a free, open, and secure international order.
Sir Oliver Robbins emphasized the UK’s dedication to its partnership with India, stating, “In a more complex world, there is strong ambition from both governments to take this partnership to even greater heights.” The visit also included meetings with other Indian government officials, indicating the comprehensive nature of the bilateral engagement.
The successful conclusion of these high-level talks underscores the enduring strength and strategic importance of the India-UK relationship. Both nations have agreed to maintain regular exchanges at political and senior official levels, with the next Foreign Office Consultations slated to be held in London in 2026. This ongoing dialogue is crucial for translating shared visions into tangible outcomes, further solidifying a partnership vital for global stability and prosperity.
