The picturesque beaches of Goa, a magnet for global and domestic tourists alike, have recently become the focal point of an urgent government response following the viral circulation of videos depicting the harassment of foreign visitors. In a move to protect the state’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination, the Goa government has ordered strict action and significantly ramped up security measures across popular coastal areas.
The incidents, which sparked considerable outrage on social media, include a particularly disturbing video from Arambol beach. This footage reportedly showed a group of men forcefully attempting to pose for photographs with two foreign women who appeared visibly uncomfortable and reluctant, with the men placing their arms around them without consent. A separate incident at Vagator also involved reports of bouncers at a local establishment allegedly intervening inappropriately and causing distress to a visiting domestic family.
The state’s Tourism Department and the Goa Police have taken immediate cognisance of the matter, unequivocally condemning the acts. Tourism Director Kedar Naik branded such behaviour as “unacceptable and does not reflect the values Goa stands for.”
Following a high-level meeting with the Goa Police, the department announced a series of stringent directives aimed at enhancing the safety and comfort of all visitors:
Goa’ Tourism Minister, Rohan Khaunte, reinforced the government’s commitment, stating, “We are committed to ensuring that every visitor feels safe and comfortable here. The government will continue to work closely with the police and tourism stakeholders to promote responsible tourism and safeguard Goa’s image.”
In addition to the crackdown on unruly behaviour, authorities also reminded tourists to maintain responsible conduct during their stay and urged all tourism stakeholders to ensure a high standard of appropriate behaviour at their premises. These measures are part of a broader effort to reinforce a secure tourism environment in the state.
Visitors and residents are urged to utilize the 24×7 Tourism Helpline (1364) to report any instances of harassment, misconduct, or to seek immediate assistance. The state’s quick and decisive reaction underscores a determination to protect its most vital sector and restore the faith of international travellers in the coastal state.
