New Delhi, January 27, 2026 — India marked its 77th Republic Day with a spectacular display of military prowess, cultural vibrancy, and diplomatic strengthening. The iconic Kartavya Path was transformed into a grand stage where the nation’s history met its futuristic aspirations under the theme “150 Years of Vande Mataram.“
In a significant shift, the guest of honor was not a single head of state but the top leadership of the European Union. President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and President of the European Council António Costa joined President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This rare invitation underscored India’s burgeoning strategic and economic ties with Europe, coinciding with progress on a landmark free-trade agreement.
The parade served as a powerful showcase for India’s “Aatmanirbhar” (self-reliant) defense sector. For the first time, the Indian Army introduced a phased “Battle Array” format, a dynamic display that simulated modern battlefield scenarios.
The cultural segment was a rhythmic journey through India’s soul. Over 2,500 artists participated, with 30 tableaux from various States, Union Territories, and Ministries rolling down the boulevard.
| Highlight | Description |
| Theme | 150 Years of Vande Mataram – celebrating the national song’s role in the freedom struggle. |
| Uttar Pradesh | Showcased the cultural landscape of Bundelkhand and the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple. |
| Punjab | Paid tribute to the 350th year of martyrdom of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji. |
| Tamil Nadu | Highlighted “Techno-Jallikattu” and the state’s leadership in Electric Vehicle (EV) manufacturing. |
The ceremony began on a somber yet proud note as Prime Minister Modi paid homage at the National War Memorial. A highlight of the investiture ceremony was the conferring of the Ashoka Chakra upon Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian to visit the International Space Station, recognizing his extraordinary contribution to India’s space frontier.
As the parade concluded with the release of thousands of tricolor balloons, the 77th Republic Day stood as a testament to a nation that is deeply rooted in its traditions while fearlessly embracing the technologies of tomorrow.
