New Delhi, january 09, 2026: In a major escalation of hostilities during the winter of 2026, a massive wave of Russian drones and missiles struck Kyiv in the early hours of Friday, January 9. According to Ukrainian officials, the attack claimed the lives of at least four people and left 19 others injured, while causing significant damage to residential neighborhoods and critical infrastructure.

The assault, which lasted several hours, forced residents into bomb shelters as air sirens wailed across the capital.

Targeted Strikes and “Double-Tap” Tactics

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the bombardment hit several districts, including Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, and Desnyanskyi. One of the most tragic incidents occurred when a residential building was hit by two drones in succession—a tactic known as a “double-tap” strike.

A first-responding emergency medic was killed in the second explosion while attempting to treat victims of the initial strike. Four other members of the same medical crew were wounded in the blast. This tactic has been widely condemned by international observers as a deliberate attempt to target rescue workers and first responders.

Damage to Infrastructure

Beyond the loss of life, the strikes have crippled essential services in parts of the city:

  • Residential Buildings: Multi-story apartment complexes saw windows shattered and entire entrances destroyed. A fire broke out in the well-known Comfort Town residential complex.
  • Public Services: Major disruptions to running water and electricity were reported in several districts following hits on critical infrastructure.
  • Commercial Targets: A shopping center in the Desnyanskyi district was set ablaze, and debris fell near a medical facility and a children’s playground in other parts of the city.

National Context and Regional Impact

The attack on Kyiv was part of a broader nationwide assault. In the western city of Lviv, a high-speed ballistic missile—reported to have traveled at speeds of up to 13,000 km/h—struck infrastructure targets. Military analysts are currently investigating whether this was a deployment of the “Oreshnik” ballistic missile, similar to the one used in late 2024.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned just hours before the strikes that Russia would likely exploit the harsh winter weather to launch large-scale offensives. The freezing temperatures make the loss of heating and electricity particularly dangerous for the civilian population.

Looking Ahead

Rescue operations are continuing as municipal crews work through the freezing temperatures to restore power and water to affected households. The Ukrainian government has called for increased international support for air defense systems to mitigate the impact of these long-range barrages.

As the conflict enters another year, the focus remains on the resilience of Ukraine’s energy grid and the safety of its civilian population during the peak of winter.
