The political landscape in Bihar is abuzz with the potential entry of one of its most popular cultural icons, folk singer Maithili Thakur, into the upcoming 2025 Assembly elections. The young artist, celebrated for her renditions of Maithili and Bhojpuri songs, has openly expressed her interest in contesting the polls, specifically stating a strong preference for her home region.

The speculation surrounding Maithili Thakur’s political debut intensified following her recent high-profile meetings with top Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, including the party’s National General Secretary Vinod Tawde and Union Minister Nityanand Rai. These meetings, and the pictures shared on social media by the BJP leaders, have fueled rumours that the 25-year-old singer might be fielded as a candidate for the saffron party.

Preference for Her ‘Village Constituency’

When questioned by reporters about the constituency she would prefer to contest from, Maithili Thakur was clear about her desire to stay connected to her roots.

“I would like to contest from my home constituency… my village, if given a poll ticket,” Thakur said, adding, “I have a special connect with that place. Starting my political career from here would teach me a lot, allow me to meet people, talk to them, and understand their concerns.”

Maithili Thakur hails from the Benipatti area in the Madhubani district of Bihar. Consequently, the Benipatti Assembly seat in Madhubani district has emerged as the primary constituency from where she is most likely to be fielded. Reports also suggest that the party may consider the Alinagar seat in the Darbhanga district, given its location within the Mithilanchal region where the singer enjoys massive popularity.

Not ‘Playing Games’: A Goal to Serve

Clarifying her motivation for the career shift, Thakur distanced herself from the conventional definition of politics.

“I am not coming here to do politics or play games,” she asserted. “My goal is to have the power to bring about change. The next five years are very crucial for Bihar, and I am ready to contribute in every possible way to the development of the country.” She emphasized that serving her region would be the greatest joy for her.

The potential inclusion of Maithili Thakur in the electoral fray is seen by political observers as a strategic move by the BJP to appeal directly to younger voters in the Mithilanchal region, where she holds considerable influence. Her immense popularity on social media, combined with her appointment as a ‘State Icon’ by the Election Commission for voter awareness, further solidifies her stature as a prominent public figure.

While Maithili Thakur has expressed her readiness to contest, she maintains that she is still awaiting an official announcement regarding her candidature. The Bihar Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in two phases on November 6 and 11, with the counting of votes set for November 14. Her official political debut, if confirmed, is set to be one of the most keenly watched developments in the upcoming polls.
