December 25, 2025 — After decades of anticipation and planning, the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has officially commenced commercial operations today. The first flight, an IndiGo service from Bengaluru, touched down at 8:00 AM, signaling a historic shift in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s (MMR) aviation landscape.
With this launch, Mumbai becomes the first city in India to operate a dual-airport system, joining the ranks of global hubs like London, New York, and Dubai.
The inaugural day is set to be a busy one for the greenfield facility, which was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2025.
During this first phase, the airport will operate on a restricted 12-hour schedule from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with plans to scale up to 24/7 operations by February 2026.
Developed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL)—a partnership between Adani Airport Holdings and CIDCO—the airport is designed to alleviate the extreme congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).
| Phase | Annual Passenger Capacity | Key Features |
| Phase 1 (Current) | 20 Million | 1 Runway, Terminal 1, 42 Parking Stands |
| Final Phase (2032) | 90 Million | 4 Terminals, 2 Parallel Runways |
The terminal design itself is a tribute to Indian heritage, featuring an overarching aesthetic inspired by the lotus flower, India’s national flower.
NMIA is being marketed as one of India’s most technologically advanced “smart” airports. Key features available from day one include:
While the “take-off” is a celebration of engineering, travelers are advised to plan ahead. Some connecting infrastructure, including certain approach roads and the Targhar railway station link, remains under construction. Currently, the airport is primarily accessible via road, and passengers are encouraged to account for additional travel time during the initial weeks of operation.
Beyond passenger travel, the airport is a massive logistics win. With an initial cargo capacity of 0.5 million tonnes, its proximity to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) makes it a vital hub for cold-chain exports, including pharmaceuticals and perishables.
As the first engines roar over the Ulwe wetlands today, Navi Mumbai is no longer just a satellite city—it is now a global gateway.
