Odisha Extends Internet Shutdown in Cuttack Amid Communal Tensions; Officials Review Situation

In a significant move aimed at curbing the spread of misinformation and restoring order, the Odisha government has extended the suspension of internet services in Cuttack. This decision follows successive incidents of violent communal clashes that erupted during the Durga idol immersion processions over the weekend, severely disrupting the peace in the city.

The initial internet suspension, enforced to prevent the misuse of social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter) for circulating provocative and inflammatory content, has been prolonged through to the evening of Tuesday, October 7th. The restriction covers key areas including the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) area, the Cuttack Development Authority (CDA) region, and the adjoining 42 Mauza zone, though essential services like banking and government intranet remain exempt.

The unrest began with an initial clash on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, reportedly sparked by objections to loud music during an immersion procession in the Daragha Bazar area. The situation escalated, leading to stone pelting and injuries. A second, more serious disturbance occurred on Sunday evening when police intercepted a bike rally attempting to pass through sensitive localities, resulting in further stone-pelting that left at least 25 people injured, including several police personnel. In total, the violence has reportedly injured over 30 individuals.

Following the flare-ups, authorities imposed a 36-hour curfew across 13 of the city’s 20 police station areas. Senior officials, including the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) of the central division, have since visited the city to review the law and order situation and coordinate efforts on the ground. Police have confirmed multiple arrests, with investigations ongoing using CCTV, drone footage, and eyewitness accounts to identify and apprehend all involved parties.

While the city remained tense, security forces, including several platoons of state police and paramilitary companies, have been heavily deployed across vulnerable zones to maintain a strict vigil and enforce the prohibitory orders. Political leaders, including the Chief Minister, have appealed to the citizens of the historically harmonious city to maintain peace and assured that stringent action will be taken against those attempting to disturb communal unity. The extension of the internet shutdown is seen as a crucial precautionary step to prevent any further escalation of tensions, allowing time for the curfew and heightened security measures to take full effect and restore complete normalcy.
